- One Room Challenge: The BIG Reveal
I’ve been giddy with excitement to share the BIG reveal of Jackson’s new room with all of you. When Linda fromCalling it Home invited to be part of this season’sOne Room Challenge withHouse Beautiful, I knew exactly what room I wanted to design: redesigning Jackson’s bedroom from a nursery to a toddler room. It was a labor of love putting the pieces together for his room – I was my own client! I didn’t want it to look cookie cutter – I wanted to make sure it had layers, depth and texture and I couldn’t be happier with the result! It is a bedroom that shines with Jackson’s personality. I began with the bed. I wanted a simple upholstered bed that I could spruce up with interesting textiles, pillows and linens. I began with a Helix mattress. It is divine and so easy to install – it arrived in the mail in a box! Nest step was bedding – I worked with SF based Coyuchi on putting together the perfect layered bed with their beautiful bed linens and blankets. It all began with a stripped wool blanket at the end of the bed, a simple white bedcover, and a gray striped pillow. The sheets are the softest flannel I have ever felt. A total enticement to sleep in his big boy bed! To add dimension to the simple bed frame, I draped a stunning hand-loomed wool bedcover from Hollywood at Home. I also adorned the bed with a world map pillow by Peter Dunham Textiles – hopefully I will pass my love of travel on to Jackson! Next, I knew I wanted the artwork to be made by Jackson. He is so happy when he is painting – especially when it’s a dance party with paint. He was fortunate to be able to create the paintings for his room at Heather Day’s studio. He is so proud of his paintings and points it out to anyone entering his room. Moving to the wall color – I also chose Farrow & Ball paint in All White. Jackson’s room is darker than the rest of our apartment and the white has brightened the room considerably. I also lightened the room with an off-white and slate gray rug by The Mine. I added a table in the center of the room for creative activities, which is actually a coffee table. Jackson loves to read his books, draw, and of course play with his trucks on this table! I added a small stool and two pillows from Hollywood at Home to create seating for Jackson and his friends. The lighting update in the room transformed the space in a major way! Theoverhead lightingreminds Jackson of a helicopter andthe globe and brass bedside lampcreates a soft glow to read books by prior to bedtime! I couldn’t be happier with all of my lighting choices fromHayneedle. Finally, thepom-pom basketfromPehr Designis perfect to store all of Jackson’s basketballs. I had acustom basketball hoopinstalled on the wall. The recycled barn wood blends perfectly with the grey and blue tones of the room. And I am crazy about the pendants byMcGee & Co. They add a festive spirit to the room. The small shelves next to the closet house a few heirlooms – old books, Jackson’s favorite stuffed animals, and his silhouette from a few years ago. Honestly, what makes me happiest about this room is that it is the perfect reflection of Jackson! Be sure to check out the other ORC participates big REVEALS today! - Thanksgiving: One Stop at Marin Country Mart
I have to admit. Although I’m a city girl at heart, I always seem to find a reason to venture across the bay to Marin. A week rarely goes by where you don’t find me running errands, having lunch with friends, or meeting with clients. One of my go-to places is Marin Country Mart. Located in Larkspur, there is the perfect collection of stores, restaurants, and open space that make it a great place to go with kids or solo. In the summer, I love the open spaces and outdoor seating scattered throughout. In the winter, I always look forward to the outdoor holiday markets. There is always a reason to head to Marin Country Mart! Thanksgiving is no exception. You can take care of all of your shopping needs here. I have compiled a sample of the great ways you can make your holiday easier, all at the same destination. Next, I would head toFisher’s Wine & Cheese. Pick up a selection of cheese, and a few accessories to go along with it. I chose dried apples, cheese, bourbon barrel chocolate, and a bottle of wine. Who wouldn’t appreciate all of these goodies! If you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner, here are the places I would be sure to visit and make my preparation time much shorter: Belcampo has all of your needs for the Thanksgiving table. You can buy a variety of turkeys to bake – smoked, white, or heirloom. And if you would rather enjoy your company, consider picking up your side dishes already prepared. I picked up sweet potatoes, roasted root vegetables, brussel sprouts with bacon, gravy, and cranberry sauce. This will make your dinner easier and leave you with the energy to enjoy friends and family. Rustic Bakery is the perfect place to buy your baked goods. Their pies are not only delicious, they are also the most beautiful pies you’ve ever seen. You can also chose some pastries for the morning or rolls for your dinner. Finally, the last place to stop is Three Twins Ice Cream. I got salted caramel ice cream (my husband’s favorite). Served with the pumpkin pie or alone, it is dreamy. Of course, it’s also nice to have a warm cozy sweater for the special celebration. I picked out a hand knitted sweater at Erica Tanov. I worked for Erica while I was in college and the quality of her clothing and home wares make them timeless and collector items. I have several of her stunning jackets and they have stood the test of time. I never tire of them. MY MARIN MART THANKSGIVING FAVORITES Thanksgiving is only a little over a week away – let the planning and shopping commence. I hope to see you at Marin Country Mart! - One Room Challenge: Week Six
I’m getting so excited to share Jackson’s new room with you. One more week until the BIG reveal! We just finished up shooting the entire room this morning. It’s SO GOOD! I actually haven’t been this excited about a room in a long time. It came together exactly how I envisioned – with a few minor edits along the way. It’s been a busy week hanging the ceiling light fixture – a task that you would think would be quick easy but it a rather complicated in my old apartment. Photo below of what we uncovered when taking down his old light. Let’s just say, the light fixture that we ordered from Hayneedle is up and makes the room. Plus, Jackson thinks it’s “awesome” as he said when he got home from school. Earlier this week I also had the daunting task of styling his room. Why is it so hard to do in your own home and not clients home? I get so incredibly nervous! I couldn’t be happier with the results. I’m insanely giddy with how his entire room came together. Both Eric and I talk about how we wish we could sleep in his room. Stay tuned next week for the REVEAL! In the meantime, take a look back at the past weeks updates before the full tour comes next week. - Travel Guide: 12 Hours in LA
Sometimes when it comes to sourcing for clients it takes a trip to a new city to get inspiration. One of those inspiring cities is Los Angeles. What I love about traveling to LA is that it’s close enough to do a day of sourcing without having to pack. A little over a week ago I left before the sunrise and landed in LA for a day of jam-packed sourcing. One thing I do before every trip – big or small – is to map out what stores, restaurants and locations I want to visit and then decide where to start. This helps avoid zig-zagging across a city. When traveling it’s essential for me to keep business and personal items separate. That’s why I love that with Uber I can have a business profile within my app. It makes expense time way easier. When it comes to getting around, Uber is the most convenient way – especially when you want your day to be hassle-free. I set out from LAX to the furthest destination – Shoppe Amber Interiors. It is one of my favorite places to pick up pieces for clients and also get inspired. This shop, which is only a 40 minute drive from the airport, is filled to the brim with unique pieces – it’s not to be missed. Next up on the trip was Hollywood at Home. I’ll be doing an entire post about this showroom/shop because it’s one of those spots anyone working on their home should visit for inspiration. From their beautiful pillows, stunning bedcovers (I’m obsessed!), and gorgeous antique furniture, it left me wanting to makeover my entire house. From there I needed to re-fuel and headed to Platform LA. A new-ish gem in Culver City houses the likes of Freda Salvador, Tenoverten, Janessa Leone and my favorite lunch spot that I dream about Loqui. Words cannot describe how good these tacos are – it brings me back to growing up in Mexico City. Just a few minutes away from Platform LA is Midland. The first time I walked in this store I felt as though Santa Fe was brought to the West Coast. Their unique finds – especially the pottery, baskets and books, are perfect pieces for any home. With a new client in mind I headed to Croft House to look at a few pieces in person. Their mission is to create sophisticated pieces of furniture that embody a relaxed California vibe. Each piece is custom made in Los Angeles. The last shop on my list was Liz’s Hardware. Even if I only have five minutes to spare, I try to pop into this gem. Every wall is filled with antique hardware that is stunning. I always seem to find a piece or two to bring back to use for a project or myself. I couldn’t leave LA without one last meal. This time it was at Gjusta Bakery. If you look at travel guides for LA you’ll find this on every list – and rightfully so. Their food is mouthwatering. I had never been for dinner before and let me tell you – it’s a must. What is usually a crowded spot was peaceful and lit up by candlelight. It was just want I needed after a hectic day running around and it got me prepped to jump in my last Uber of the day before the flight home to San Francisco. I hope you enjoyed following along on my journey to LA. If you have any questions about where to go in LA or SF for sourcing, please ask away. And if I missed any of your favorite spots ,I’d love to hear about them! This post is a partnership with Uber. All opinions are my own. - Beauty: Inside Look at International Orange Marin
Ever since becoming a mom of two, I haven’t been the best at carving out time for myself. The juggle is real. When people say going from one kid to two is way more work – they are right. I think moms have a hard time thinking about what they need to do for themselves in order to press the reset button on the craziness that life entails. I’m one of those moms. I was really good about finding time to go to Pilates, lunch with girlfriends, and even pampering myself a little bit when I had just one child. But with two, I’m on auto-pilot. I just keep going and going without a break. I almost feel as though if I sit down I won’t be able to get back up to do everything that needs to get done. A few weeks ago I realized if I didn’t stop to give myself a few hours off from work and life, I would collapse. International Orange opened in Marin Country Mart and every time I am at the Mart, I remind myself that I need to make an appointment at International Orange. Well, finally I took the time to do it! I cleared my calendar and made an appointment to be pampered! This spa is dreamy – not only is the design and aesthetic right up my alley, but you are transported into a calm and serene oasis. It is as if when you walk through the doors all of the weight on your shoulders is lifted off. I could have stayed for hours! If you are someone needing a little time to recharge, this is the place for you. I felt like a new woman after my massage and facial. Everyone needs a little pampering!
- One Room Challenge: Week Four with The Mine + Moodboard
This week, I thought I’d give you a look into my creative process by showing you some of the ideas I’ve had for my son’s room for this One Room Challenge. Two weeks ago, I went through the process of choosing the paint color – we decided to go with All White by Farrow & Ball. Jackson’s room is the darkest in our house so it needed a paint color that would brighten it up. The room was painted last week and looks perfect! It feels like an empty canvas ready for the pieces I’ve selected to come in! I wanted to choose a design that would be easy to update as Jackson gets older and his taste changes. I’m keeping it super simple, as the room serves as both a bedroom as well as a playroom. I’ve chosen a cool palate of grey and blue. This harmonizes well with the rest of our house – something I try to do with all of my projects. I also wanted to find a coffee table where he can play, create art, or build puzzles – which I found at The Mine. Then I found these beautiful vintage boat pennants from McGee & Co. When I came across them I knew they had to go in his room. One of my favorite things we’ve installed so far is the new rug. Jackson’s nursery rug didn’t quite work with the new bedroom layout and we needed more of the wood floors covered. When I came across a stunning Loloi rug called the Alder Rug on The Mine (which is having a 20% off sale at the moment!). It has arrived and is perfection. I’ve put together a mood board with some of my ideas for the room. For a small room with many challenges, I think it’s coming together perfectly. THE SOURCES The Mine – Alder Rug and White Coffee Table Farrow & Ball – All White Paint McGee & Co – California Bear Pennant and Newport Pennant Restoration Hardware – Beck Platform Bed and Avalon Nightstand Hollywood at Home – Indigo Pillow Pottery Barn Kids – Gingham Sheets in Charcoal What’s up next week? I’ll be talking about the lighting selection. A little update on the timing of this season’s One Room Challenge. Due to all of the natural disasters across the country there have been a few delays getting product in time to install. With that being said, for the first time ever ORC is extending this challenge for an extra week. This one means one thing, you get an extra sneak peek at what all of the One Room Challengers are doing. The big reveal will be November 15th! - Blooms in Season: Signs of Fall
The leaves may be changing here in the Bay Area but the weather continues to stay warm. We got a brief glimpse of crispness in the air, which got us all excited for fall layers, but alas it didn’t last. Since we’re slowly seeing signs of Fall coming, Natalie and I thought it was time to bring back Blooms in Season. To kick off the re-launch of this series Natalie outdid herself with this stunner! The mix of ferns, roses and pampas grass is the perfect combination for the start of Fall. Read more to learn about what inspired Natalie. How do you get inspired with your arrangements when a new season arrives? As soon as I see the season shift, I settle in for a few days to truly feel ready, and then I run with it. On the first day of Fall this year, the light shifted dramatically and I could see the change. It was that day that I bought my first pumpkin and decided I was ready to leave Summer behind. What did you use in this arrangement? Zinnias Pepper Tree O’Hara Roses Money Tree Pampas Grass Blue Fern (A variety of Staghorn Fern) What made you select the variety in this arrangement? I was inspired by the unexpected palate for Autumn. Even when I am ready to embrace the season, I also like to ease into the palette. There is plenty of time for oranges later in the month so I wanted to start with a nod towards the season without overdoing the color. A new season brings new blooms, what should everyone expect to see in the next month when it comes to flowers? As the season unfolds we’ll start to see more fall foliage such as maple leaves, zinnias, the last of the dahlias, bittersweet and the last rose bloom. - One Room Challenge: Week Three
Artwork for a toddler’s room can be difficult. Their interests change quickly, so investing in art is futile. I decided the best thing to use in Jackson’s room was his own art. Every week, he comes home so excited to show us the art he’s completed at preschool. I solicited the help of Heather Day to complete an art project with Jackson. I have to say, I have never see him happier. He went wild with paint, spraying water everywhere, and literally dancing in the paint. Over a week later his toes are still blue. He painted on a large canvas – about 6 feet by 6 feet. Now that the paint has dried I’m trying to figure out which portion of the canvas to use in his room – I love it all! Stay tuned for the final reveal that will showcase this fun masterpiece. I’m thrilled with how it turned out. And Jackson loves that his artwork will be highlighted in his big boy room. Next week, I’ll be sharing details about the full mood board behind the pieces I’ve selected for his room. - Entertaining: New Traditions for the Holidays
This post is a partnership with World Market. All opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting sponsored posts that keep Sacramento Street doors open. Thanksgiving holds a special place in my heart. Growing up as a child in Mexico, it was always a challenge to put together the traditional Thanksgiving meal. We usually had a gathering with other ex-pat friends, and the gathering was always packed with interesting and diverse people. This year, we plan to travel to Oregon to visit family. The table will be bursting with our growing families, so I offered to set up our first table set-aside solely for the kiddos! I partnered with World Market to put together the perfect table that the kids will enjoy. I tried to keep the table in a style that would go well with the main table, but also have some special items to keep them entertained. The little place marks have colored pencils inside, along with cards to draw on. Beautiful orange napkins against a simple square white plate, add a festive spirit to the mix. Probably my favorite item on the table, are the copper mugs. No worries about breaking their cups, and they can be used later for adults to enjoy a hot beverage! Finally, I nearly did a backflip when I found poppers to give add a festive spirit. We have always had poppers at Christmas, but why not bring them out for Thanksgiving too? Let me tell you, I can’t wait to get back toWorld Marketfor the holiday décor. There were so many great things and I have such a soft spot for this time of year. Family, friends, and gatherings of the heart, make this my favorite time of year.
- One Room Challenge: Week Two
One of the first things I like to decide when I design a room, is what treatment and color to use on the walls. In Jackson’s bedroom, I was trying to decide between white and grey. This is a tricky room for color, as there is little natural light so it tends to be a bit darker than the rest of our house. I had Jackson as my helper, which quickly got out of hand! In the end, I am planning to use white in the room. It will be lighter and brighter with this choice! THE PAINT COLOR CONTENDERS Plummett All White Manor House Gray Wevet I’m thrilled with Farrow & Ball as a sponsor for the paint. The quality of their paint is unsurpassed. In addition, the depth of color is unmatched. I have always felt their colors have such deep and rich pigmentation, that the difference is without a doubt, is substantial. I want the room to be clean and bright, yet it has to stand up to my son’s active rough-and-tumble lifestyle. I made the decision to use their estate eggshell for easy clean up, since it’s washable. This is a must with a toddler obsessed with basketball – even indoors! Farrow & Ball has 132 incredible colors to choose from. I’ve gone with All White for the room. I believe this will be the perfect blank slate for the décor. I can’t wait to show you the finished product after we paint. Now on to countless other decisions in the next few weeks! I’ll keep you posted. Keep track of the other designers involved in One Room Challenge – I’ve listed them below.
