- Get a Head Start on Holiday Gift Wrapping
Time is precious to me, especially now that I’m the mother to a toddler. There are many hours in my day that are devoted to things like messy play, park visits, or diaper changes. Some of the things I was able to accomplish before Jackson just don’t get done as quickly as before. Holidays and all of the extra things attached often seem to creep up on me now and I don’t find the time to get everything done. One solution I’ve found is sitting down at night, after my son is in bed, and ordering many of the things I need from Amazon. Since we’re Prime members, it’s so great to be able to place an order and have the items at my doorstep the next day. Not only can I find everyday items I need, I can also get those items needed for the holiday season. This leaves me with more time to enjoy my family and also getting some things crossed off my list of things to do. Recently, I ordered everything I need to wrap gifts for the holidays – the paper, ribbon, scissors, tape –it’s all set to go. Now I can wrap as I find the gifts for the people I love. One place I use as my go-to place to find shoes is Zappos. I love how I am able to get them quickly with free shipping and simple return policies. One brand that’s my frequently my choice for comfort, are Rockports. Recently I found a pair of black suede ballet flats that are not only comfortable, but also look great for any activity I might be going to. Let’s face it, most of the time we are jumping from glamorous to not-so-glamorous in a heartbeat. Finding the right pair of comfortable and nice looking shoes can be a challenge. I urge you to head directly to Zappos for an incredibly easy way to buy shoes. And if you’re looking for comfort, consider Rockport as your choice! As many of you know, I’m not one of those women who wear heels very often. Maybe it’s because I’m nearly six feet tall, or it could be as a result of my crazy lifestyle at the moment. In any given day, I might be running to client meetings, schlepping props to a photo shoot, or going to the park with my son. Wearing shoes that are easy on my feet are a priority for me. - Shop Small: Embrace Your Sweet Tooth
This time of year, I’m always looking for small businesses that have items I can work into celebrating the holidays. And what better holiday to celebrate than National Chocolate Day! I’ve been a lover of chocolate forever. There is nothing like a piece of good chocolate to pick me up in the middle of a busy workday. I like the challenge of finding small producers of fine chocolate to support my habit. Earlier this week, I stumbled upon a chocolate shop that took my love affair to a whole new level. Dandelion Chocolate, a local purveyor of everything chocolate, is located at 18th and Valencia in the Mission district here in San Francisco. I chose a wide selection of chocolate bars for my family and myself but also took the time to drink a hot chocolate – it was unlike anything I’ve ever tasted. As an American Express Card holder, you can receive 2X rewards when you enroll you eligible Amex card and spend at qualifying small businesses through the end of the year. This is a win-win offer – you support small businesses and also receive double rewards. To learn more go to amex.co/shopsmalloffer and to see if your favorite chocolate shop or small business qualifies, check out the Amex Shop Small map. Happy chocolate hunting! - Shop Small in Marin
As the air begins to change and I can start wearing my sweaters and boots, I often head over the Golden Gate Bridge to Marin, where many of my favorite small shop owners have their places. I have to admit, you can find me there on most weekends. I marvel that I’m living in San Francisco but can be a few minutes away from a region known for seafood, redwoods, and high quality small business owners. Over twelve years ago, when I first moved to the city, one of the places I found in Marin was Summer House. It’s one of my all time favorite shops. Summer House has two stores filled to the rim with furniture, rugs, pillows, and accessories for the home. This is a shop where I’m constantly finding pieces for my own home and clients. Another Mill Valley favorite I’m obsessed with is True Botanicals for their organic natural skin care products that have changed my skin for the better. I also love popping over to Margaret O’Leary for their incredible sweaters(love this sweater weather!) and Mint for a cute item for my toddler! Once I’ve hit up these Mill Valley favorites, I head to either Rustic Bakery or Farm Shop for a delicious and fresh salads for lunch. Both located in Marin County Mart. If you haven’t been – it’s a must! I first began coming here when Erica Tanov opened. Erica Tanov carries both home goods and clothing designed right here in the Bay Area. This will always be one of my favorite shops, as I worked for her while I was in college. I know that her pieces are made to last a lifetime and have truly been the foundation of my wardrobe! As an American Express Blue Cash Everyday Card holder, shopping small businesses means I’m not only supporting them, but I also get regular rewards — this is a win-win combination! And to make it even more enticing, Amex is offering 2X Rewards when you enroll your eligible Amex card and spend at qualifying small businesses through the end of the year. Learn more about this exceptional deal here. And if you’re not sure where to shop with your card, they’ve also got you covered with an easy-to-use small business map. You can search for all the qualifying small merchants close to your home. This post is a partnership with American Express Blue Cash Everyday. All opinions are my own. - Style: Stepping into Fall
With the forecast going from warm 75 degree days to chilly mornings to days where it’s pouring down rain – it’s been hard to get dedicated to Fall officially being here. I feel as though our weather can’t really decide if it’s still Indian Summer or Fall. This past weekend, it finally felt a bit more like we were heading to cooler temperatures. Although we don’t need heavy winter attire here in San Francisco, we do get brisk days that call for puffy coats and warm boots for the early morning trips to the park or on site for clients walk-throughs. Each year, I get to mid-February and realize I’ve either ruined my nice leather boots or worn my rain boots when it’s totally unnecessary. That’s why these SORELCheyanne™ Lace Full Grain boots hit the mark for being the perfect boot. These SOREL boots are comfy, waterproof, and warm. Plus, Zappos was a dream to order from – I saw that rain was in the forecast and ordered them in anticipation. A few days later they were at my doorstep. Talk about speedy! Now that the cooler weather is here I can’t wait to get these SOREL boots into my regular shoe rotation. I see a lot of fall adventures happening in these sturdy boots. Do you have any fall or winter wardrobe items that you are coveting right now? Particularly, boots? All of mine from past seasons are completely done. Let me know if the comments below! - Real Talk / Real Moms: Holiday Traditions
As the end of October approaches each year I start to get excited for the holidays. I’m not the type of person that is big on traditions during the year – except during the holiday season. I love that the holidays bring out love in so many different ways. Now that Jackson is a toddler, I want to start some of the smaller traditions my family did together. Holiday Cards Putting together our holiday cards to send out to family and friends has always been my task, but this year I’m going to enlist Jackson into putting stamps on the envelopes – he loves stickers. PJ’s on Christmas Eve Picking out Christmas pajamas has been a long standing tradition in my family. I want to continue to do that with Jackson. I find it so fun searching for the perfect pair each year! Tree Trimming There is nothing I love more than pulling out our Christmas boxes to pull out all of the decorations we’ve collected over the years. This year I think it will be a lot of fun including Jackson in this tradition. Santa Clause We started this with Jackson last year and thought we’d get the traditional crying photo – NOPE! He was all smiles with Santa. We will see what happens this year! Baking for Family and Friends This time of year I start pulling out new recipes to try for the holidays. One of my favorite things to do is baking cookies – especially Mexican Wedding Cakes (so good!). Traditions Around the World This year might be too soon, but I wanted to share this amazing tradition Jessica started with her family. They explore international traditions each year by crafting, cooking and taking a look into that countries celebrations. Such an inspiration – you can learn more about her experience here. For me, the holidays bring cheer, the feeling of love, and most importantly, make me reflect on what truly matters in my life. So this season, create your own traditions – whether you do a few things or have a list a mile long. Remember this holiday season to make these memories special and someday they might be traditions your kids do with their kids. I’d love to hear about traditions you have with your own family. - Style: Five Things to do Outdoors This Fall
Fall is one of my favorite seasons – the crispness in the air makes me excited for the holidays that we all know will be here before we know it. Each season, I try to put together a small list of our favorite things to do before the holidays come. One of the most important things for us is enjoying the outdoors. With a little one we are constantly thinking of new adventures to go on with him. Last Sunday, there was a break between rain storms so we took full advantage of this time. We put on our cozy fall layers – myself in a flannel shirt I can’t stop wearing and Jackson in his toggle jackson, which he loves! We packed up into the car and drove to Lands End – one of the most incredible places to see where the ocean meets the bay. It’s times like these that I cherish living in this city. Five Things to do Outdoors This Fall Puddle jumping in the rain (we’ve already checked this off our list multiple times!). A trip to the pumpkin patch. Go to our local farmers market weekly to cook seasonal food. Explore both the Presidio and Golden Gate Park. Find an apple orchard near SF to take the family to. What do you have on your fall do-to list? I’m constantly adding to ours! - Blooms in Season: Fall Roses
As we move further into fall, not only do the leaves start changing colors, we also get to to see new flowers that are coming into season. As Natalie and I brainstormed this installment to share with all of you, we both wanted something unique. And boy, did Natalie throw it out of the park – the roses she found are breathtaking! These roses are true beauties – I dream about the hues! Tell us a little bit about the different varieties of Roses that you wanted to highlight. There are different classes of roses. Florabunda (lots of blooms, usually have several blooms on each stem and bloom more frequently), hybrid rose (pointy center with a long straight stem and is the typical florist rose) Shrub Roses (David Austin roses). Koko Loko (florabunda) Abraham Darby (David Austin) Pieder B (Hybrid Tea) These roses are beyond special and were grown by the talented rose grower Fallon Shea. The second I met her I knew I wanted more Fallon in my life. She understand roses and has a passion that I admire and that passionate spirit comes through in her flowers. We see roses all year long at the flower market and the grocery store – is there a time of year that they are in season? Roses are in season from April through October and they go dormant in the winter. Typically you would prune them in January and they stop producing in November. The heaviest bloom is the first bloom and in California that is the end of April or May and they slow down in the summer and then have a second bloom in September or October. This is the reason why some rose shoes are in the Fall rather than the Spring. Those that are seen throughout the winter months are grown in greenhouses or South America. In my opinion it is best to avoid supporting South American roses as they have terrible growing practices. Do you have any tips on handling roses when you are arranging them? AKA, not getting poked. I suggest using a sharp knife or scissors to cut off the thorns before using them to arrange. Some thorns are smaller and they actually hurt more when you get pricked. I suggest wearing gloves when handling them. What’s the typical longevity of freshly cut roses? Roses can last anywhere from two days to a week depending on the variety and specifics of the rose. Roses are not the longest lasting flower there is. Do you have any tips on what to do to have them last longer? The best way to process a freshly cut rose is to cut the stem under water before you transfer it to the vase. This will keep an air bubble from forming which stops the rose from pulling water. Many people swear by using flower fresh powdered product but that is not something I do. I also suggest cutting the rose on an angle. To get inspired by past Blooms in Season posts – click here. - Design & Technology: Workspace Reimagined
Armed with determination and a huge dose of good luck, I quickly found the perfect studio space a block away from my home. It has two beautiful bay windows – one with a built-in seating and the other is home to my desk. And my desk is the home of my new favorite tool in making my creative world successful – my HP Spectre. This incredible computer has unlocked my creative process and helped me reimagine where I am going with my business. When I first received the HP Spectre in June, it gave me the flexibility I needed to work anywhere. What I didn’t realize, was that I would actually get my inspiration for how I would decorate the office from the design of the computer. I love the warm tones of copper and the black so much, I’m using patterns of black, white and grey color scheme in the décor of the new workspace. I had originally planned a blue & white look similar to my home, but the black grew on me and now I’ve taken a turn in what I’m doing and I’m excited to finish it up this dream in the making. I still can’t believe how quickly things have moved forward. And it all happened in a serendipitous way. My dream of finding an office has become a reality. I know that having this new space will lead to a new potential for design projects and creative ideas. While the office has quite a way to go – I know I’m moving in the right direction. I’ve kicked off picking out pieces for each room and HP Spectre has helped me to get there. I can’t wait to reveal the whole space in the coming months! - Tidy Teamwork
Before Jackson could walk, he loved to be a part of cleaning up. I honestly think he might have inherited my gene of liking everything to be clean and tidy. From the get-go, we’ve tried to make cleaning up a fun activity. We sing a “clean up” song and he loves to put his toys away – especially before bedtime. Recently, Jackson loves to sweep the kitchen. He always points out if there is something on the ground with a loud “uh oh”! In addition, when I’m cleaning, he loves to clean as well. His favorite is to wipe off the tray of his high chair after he finishes eating. These fun routines include him in taking care of our home. Obviously, as he gets older, the routines will become a bit more layered but I’m just happy he enjoys being part of the cleaning up process. There is no question that my house gets dirty faster with a little one running around. Snacks get dropped, toys get scattered, and dishes can pile up. But I firmly believe that instilling the good habit of tidying up, can enforce habits of mind for our littles at an early age. I’ve recently begun to use Lemi Shine products when we clean together as a family. Not only do these products work well, they are also safe for all of us. So I hope to continue the cleaning up process as something that is both fun and safe! Be sure to check out these coupons Lemi Shine is offering readers on their products.
