  • Motherhood: Educating Your Littles on Recycling in the Bathroom

Spring is finally here, and it’s time to do some conscious cleaning! I’m partnering with Care To Recycle®, a program of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. that raises awareness about bathroom recycling. I grew up in a household of devoted conservationists. We lived in Mexico City and there was no recycling available. However, that didn’t stop us from starting a program of recycling at the school I went to (Colegio Americano) and also introducing recycling into the American Embassy. To say the least, recycling is part of my DNA. Yet now that I have my own family, I’ve noticed that in the bathroom, we sometimes let things slip and recyclable items end up in the garbage. Since becoming a mother, I have found that my life has become busier than ever before. Trying to juggle a toddler with being a working mom, often finds me letting things fall by the wayside. For example, I have had times where I put items in the trash that could certainly be recycled. What I had failed to do, is set up a system that is in the bathroom and easy to use. That is where Care To Recycle® has come to the rescue! By setting up a system right in the bathroom, recycling becomes effortless! I’ve recently learned that I’m not the only one. With so much going on for moms, it’s easy to understand how even the simplest tasks can fall off a to-do list. Children are playing a big role in a mom’s productivity, with three in four moms reporting that involving their kids in their to-do list helps them get more done. The Care To Recycle® program teaches families the importance of recycling bathroom items and re-purposing them for different uses. I’ve found it fun to get my kiddo involved in setting this up. He actually loves to organize (I know – apple doesn’t fall far from the tree!) and so with his help, we can get the bathroom recycling set up and working for all of us. Jackson and I have found all kinds of uses for toilet paper rolls. They’re perfect for making poppers for the holidays and birthday celebrations. And any box that crosses our path, is reconfigured for his trains to ride through! We’ve even set up a Reward Chart that makes it fun for him to use as he completes certain tasks throughout the day. It all started it when we had to change up his regular bedtime routine by adding teeth brushing. The “reward” is a sticker, which he is obsessed with. He loves putting stickers on his “Shining Star Chart” – you can download your very own here. To begin with, you need to differentiate between those items that are recyclable and those to place in the garbage. Here are the items you can recycle: Shampoo and conditioner bottles Body wash bottles Lotion bottles Baby powder bottles Facial cleanser bottles Body oil bottles Toilet paper rolls Cardboard boxes Cartons (for over-the-counter medicine, lotions, soap and adhesive bandages) And here is a list of what you shouldn’t recycle: Toothbrushes Toothpaste tubes (they’re made from plastic laminate) Pumps (they have multiple components). Throw these in the trash then recycle the bottle. Floss containers (they also contain multiple components) Recycling can be fun and will take your children on the path of being stewards of their world. I hope this has inspired you to not only begin recycling in your own bathroom but to get the entire family involved in such an incredible mission Johnson & Johnson Consumer Inc. has begun. • Interiors: Putting Your Personal Stamp On Your Design

Whenever I sit down with a client, I try to make sure that the design of their home includes items that put their stamp on the design. In some cases, I help them create an art wall composed of their travel photos or family shots. In other cases it might be artwork they’ve collected over the years. It is important to have something that matters to you in your home design. One source I have been using for a long time to create these pieces with meaning is Shutterfly. They have a whole array of items you can personalize for your home. Two years ago, we gave all of our family personalized gifts and they are still talking about them! (click here see that post) Of course, the personalized calendar was a great hit but also mobile phone covers, wall hangings and monogrammed trays. This year, I decided to create a few items for my own home in our entryway. The first item I made was a print of a photograph I took on my trip to Istanbul. The photo was taken from my phone yet the quality of the print is excellent – no grainy texture at all. I also had a photo of our family and a quote mounted with white frames. My son walks by everyday and makes a comment about the photo! I also personalized alucite tray with a marble print and a catch-all tray with one of my favorite quotes about home. A favorite photo of Jackson in front of a train we were about to board, is his pride and joy, so we got that printed on this 5×5 acrylic print. To finish it off, a personalized candle is always a perfect accent in an entry. The more “you” in your home, the more it reflects the people who live there. These are the items that can tell the story of who you are and what matters to you. These items can be constantly evolving and changing – reflecting the many experiences and people in your life. If you love to travel, consider a few carefully chosen photographs of the places you have journeyed to. Consider Shutterfly to personalize your home and tell your unique story. And if you are at a loss for a gift for a loved one, consider putting together a personalized gift they will cherish. You can’t go wrong with items that celebrate who you are! • Real Talk / Real Moms: Childcare & Preschools

Happy Friday! Today’s installment of Real Moms is all about childcare and finding the right preschool. To be honest, this couldn’t have been a better month to talk about this subject. We just went through the entire preschool admissions process – boy it was rough. But I’m going to start at the beginning. We talked about childcare for working moms last year – read the full post here. Thankfully, we love our nanny. She’s been with us since Jackson was 3.5 months old. The first year she was three days a week, which was the perfect transition for getting back into work with a little. I wanted those special days of just “us”. Last year we added her on to four and a half days a week. Let’s be honest, when you work for yourself you end up working less traditional hours, so having our nanny move to the new schedule freed up some time for me. Our quality family time together is in the mornings, then at 4pm each day I’m all his with no distractions and weekends we spend as a family. This past fall we began the inevitable preschool search. All summer I grew more and more nervous for what was to come. The playground moms were talking up a storm about which schools were the best, most elite, which schools were part time or full time and after each trip to the park, I left me with my head spinning around. I’d go home and tell Eric what I had learned. I was already stressed and we hadn’t seen a single school. I could see the grey hairs starting to come in! September came and the day to sign up for tours hit – mark your calendars, set alarms, and make a priority list is what I was told. So, that’s what I did. Unfortunately, I was on a styling job and couldn’t sign up myself. Luckily Eric took over the lead. I got text about each one, some were already full (seriously!), some we couldn’t tour until January, some froze, I was seeing the texts and all I could think was “the madness has only just begun.” Luckily, we got a tour at every school and our Saturday mornings were now being spent touring potential preschools with 20-40 other families that we were essentially “competing” against. I’d look around the rooms and think – what does one family have that the other doesn’t. The admissions directors don’t meet our kids, so they base everything off our child’s birth date, gender and questions the parents answer. When January came, we had toured all of our top schools, had our favorite’s and turned in every application. Now all we could do was wait . . . March 8th hit and the admissions letters started coming into my inbox. Each one said, wait pooled, wait pooled, wait pooled. By noon, we had found out we were wait pooled at each school. I was doing a photo shoot and all I wanted to do was breakdown and cry. How could this happen? What did we do wrong? What could we have said that would’ve helped us? Who wouldn’t want our son at their school? The questions kept circling over and over in my head. This all seemed harder than getting into college. Luckily, I’m surrounded by incredibly supportive family and friends that reassured me that everything would work out. This past Monday as Jackson and I flew back from visiting Eric in Arizona, we received the call we had been hoping to receive after five long days. We had been admitted to our top choice. I could finally breathe – I accepted before the director could even finish telling me all of the admissions information. Our deposit is in and Jackson is going to preschool. This was a process I knew we would have to go through as parents. What I learned from friends that had been through it was that it all works out in the end. No matter if you get denied, wait pooled or accepted. There are options for everyone – each families journey is different but it will work out. And luckily we had a happy ending and absolutely love the school that Jackson is going to attend this fall. We couldn’t be happier! Be sure to check out the other mama’s post because each of us has had a different experience since we live scattered throughout the country: Alex | Jen | Leah | HeyMama | Cyd Natalie | Rebecca | Catherine | Sarah And be sure to check out past posts from this series! • Hatch Collection for Spring

During my pregnancy with Jackson, I was fortunate that several of my friends knew about Hatch Collection when my baby bump began to show. Fast forward two plus years and I’m pregnant with our second child (a girl!). Let me tell you, I was surprised how quickly I popped this time around! I didn’t show until nearly six months with Jackson. Not so this time. I’m at six months now and I look like I did at eight months the first time! Stroll Short | Lyndi Top I’m now entirely wearing maternity clothes (especially in the pants department) and I thank my lucky stars that I knew to go directly to Hatch to get items that were not only stylish but also comfortable. Our weather here in San Francisco has finally turned to spring – one of the nicest times of year here. Especially with their new Spring Collection launching – perfect timing to dress this bump. I wanted to find items that were for warmer weather – since we spend a significant amount of time traveling to warmer weather this time of year. Georgie Jumper What I love about Hatch is the quality of their fabrics, the style of the items and the wide selection. I chose a great spaghetti strap jumper that I can’t get enough of! I have been wearing it almost every day since it arrived – I’m in love with it. I also found a beige sleeveless top that looks great with shorts (boy do I need to work on my tan!) or with jeans. I like to buy items that can transition from work to play. Often, I don’t have the time to change from one outfit to the other, so items that can be versatile are a must! I depend on Hatch for looking my best during my pregnancy months! Check out past Hatch posts – first pregnancy and from after. This post is a partnership with Hatch Collection. • March Moodboard

Each year March marks the start of warm weather for me. It’s probably because we travel down to Arizona twice throughout the month to visit Eric. I relish the warm sunshine we get to enjoy in Arizona for a couple of days, especially after the rainy season we’ve had this year. This month also brings a seasonal shift. With daylight savings happening this weekend, we’ll be able to enjoy the daylight that much longer. I could see bedtime getting pushed a little more for Jackson so we can sneak off to the park for some each basketball time. Each month I want to start sharing a few things that are making me happy. Next week I’m getting a much needed haircut – do y’all ever reschedule your appointments a few times before going in? It’s been happening to me ever since I became a mom. I am loving this shorter layered look for spring and summer. I’ve been lusting over this crochet bell bag for quite some time – it’s not practical by any means but I just love it! I’ve been organizing and reorganizing our open shelving in our kitchen – wishing it could look as minimal as the photo above. With a new season I try to bring in a few new plants. Anyone else loving mini cacti and succulents – I can actually keep them alive. Had to share these pants by Madewell from their new beachwear line. I just popped into their shop here in Scottsdale and LOVE them. The lightweight fabric is perfect for warm days. Each year requires a new pair of sandals and I’m coveting these Loeffler Randall nude beauties this year. Do you have any favorite sandals? Lastly, I am working on a little master bedding refresh. This bedroom has given me a lot of inspiration to go all neutral. This throw just came in the mail from Serena & Lily for the room. Do you have anything that is inspiring you this spring? Any new favorites pieces you are adding to your wardrobe? I’d love for you to share. Hope all of you have a wonderful weekend! Photos: 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 #style #lifestyle

  • Eat Local: The Magic Flute

Now that the gloomy weather has finally lifted, I’m fully enjoying the blue skies and sunshine returning to San Francisco. Even if I have to bundle up to enjoy the break we’re having, I’m ready to eat alfresco and soak up the rays of sun. As many of you know, I recently got a workspace a block from my home on Sacramento Street. One of the perks of my office is having a restaurant right downstairs! The Magic Flute Ristorante has been an institution in our neighborhood since 1981. This is one of my favorite places to take a client or a friend (like Amanda) for lunch. I’m particularly smitten with their outdoor seating in the back. Recently, I’ve teamed up with American Express as a blogger ambassador for Blue Cash Everyday Card If you needed an excuse to dine out at a special place like The Magic Flute, you now have the perfect reason! As a new Blue Cash Everyday Card Member, you can earn 10% cash back (up to $200) within the first 6 months of Card Membership by eating at your favorite restaurants – and of course, trying out new ones! • Part of the Family – Google Home & Google Wifi

I can’t even begin to tell you just how pleased we’ve been with our Google Home & Google Wifi devices. Let’s begin with Google Home: it’s almost as if we have our own personal assistant in our home. “Ok Google. What’s the weather today?” “Ok Google. Can you play a fire truck sound?” “Ok Google, give me an oatmeal recipe?” We use Google Home almost exclusively for playing music. It’s hooked up to our Pandora account, so we always get to play music we love. Before Google Home entered our life we were playing music from our cell phones. The Google Home speaker is great – it’s all we really need in our little abode. Jackson loves dancing around to his favorite tunes. But as a designer, what I love most about both Google products is their design. They have sleek modern shapes that don’t look much different than one of my vases. They blend perfectly with my home décor, and for me, that is very important! I recommend Google Home and Google Wifi, they will bring new dimensions to your home – and maybe a dance party or two! • A Perfect Union: Freda Salvador and Anndra Neen

I was so thrilled to see my best friend and her sister from my childhood in Mexico City have partnered with my all-time favorite shoe designers – Freda Salvador. This is Freda Salvador’s fourth Capsule Collection, a southwest inspired collaboration. Phoebe and Annette Stephens were a mainstay in my life when my family and I lived in Mexico City. Most weekends, especially on Sunday, you would find us at the Stephen’s colonial home in the picturesque neighborhood of San Angel. Somehow we always ended up at their house, as they had an oasis of a garden, a great retreat from our fourth floor walk up apartment. Their paternal grandmother, a recognized artist in her time, ran in the circle of friends that included the likes of Freda Kahlo and Diego Rivera. When you walked into their home, the first thing that greeted you was a painting of their paternal grandfather done by Diego Rivera. Scattered throughout the home were also the paintings done by their grandmother and also their father, a dedicated artist. Their home remains one of my strongest memories from childhood. Fast forward twenty-some years, and the Stephen sisters launched – Anndra Neen – a thriving jewelry design business inspired by their years in Mexico City. Their work has been given commendation by the likes of WWD, Vogue, Elle, and the New York Times, to name a few. Now partnering with my friends at Freda Salvador, you begin to realize just how small our world can be! The Freda Salvador x Anndra Neen Capsule Collection is an expression of both brands: luxury meets artisan aesthetic. This collection was inspired by strong and spirited females from the past – perhaps even envisioned with the likes of Freda Kahlo. There are two pieces – a mid heel boot and a slip on mule that are part of the collection. The footwear is designed in Spain and is adorned with Anndra Neen’s mixed metal hardware, handmade in Mexico. I think this is a match made in heaven! • Monthly To Do List: February

It feels as though January came and went in the blink of an eye. Do you feel the same way? I had a huge to do list to tackle but nearly half of my list didn’t get done. February To Do List Clean back hallway – it’s my hoarding spot that we need to clear. Storage closet – get rid of anything we don’t need. A major purge needs to happen. Stay designing baby Girl’s nursery, which is my old office. It’s a tiny space. Do a toy purge! Oh my, do the toys add up quickly. Taxes – attempting to get them done early (on time) this year. I’m excited to tackle these things and cross them off my list. It’ll feel so incredibly good if I do! What do you want to get done this month?
