- Out and About Sourcing in San Francisco
Living in the city has its perks – one of them being that everything is right at our fingertips. When sourcing for clients, I try to shop as locally as possible. I love supporting small businesses and what they bring to San Francisco. As a designer, I’m constantly on the go in my daily routine and no day is the same. I find myself venturing out to source for clients around town on most weekdays – picking up props, selecting flowers, or finding the perfect furniture. It’s essential to have Uber at my fingertips to make my everyday routine easy and hassle free. I’ve been asked quite a bit lately what some of my favorite spots are around the city, so I’m taking you on a little ride through my day sourcing for a client. BLOOMERS First stop, picking up flowers. There are times when I can’t make it to the flower market in the morning, so I go to my neighborhood flower shop that is always bursting at the seams with stunning blooms. They do an incredible job at Bloomers. Something that I love about this flower shop, is that they also have an amazing selection of baskets, vases and planets that I can source for clients. TAZI DESIGNS Next, I headed to Hayes Valley to a hidden gem – Tazi Designs. Located on Linden, this store is filled to the brim with stunning merchandise from Morocco. It’s a store you could easily miss when walking around Hayes Valley, but it’s not to be missed. BLUE BOTTLE Located right next door to Tazi Designs is Blue Bottle. Who doesn’t need a little pick me up to help get them through a day of sourcing around town? This is especially true on a warm day. It’s always important to take a break and figure out where to head next. CISCO HOME Last stop of the day is the brand new Cisco Home on Sacramento Street. We use Cisco all the time for projects and now that it is located just a few blocks from our office, it makes it even more convenient to go check out the pieces and fabrics in person. Since each day I have a different schedule each day and I’m heading out to source all around the city, it makes it vital to have all of my go-to shops at my fingertips. With Uber, I’m able to save all of these spots in my saved places. Instead of having to go look up their address each time I set out for my day, they are right there for me to use when calling my next ride. I’m thankful that I can enjoy myself while sourcing thanks to Uber and not have to worry about looking for parking in each location – something every San Franciscan is challenged with! - Style: Our Happy Place
It’s hard to believe that summer is right around the corner. Where did time go? We’ve had a small dose of summer-like weather here in San Francisco and my mind is having major wanderlust. I’ve been dreaming of all the warm weather spots I’d like to travel to – Todos Santos, Havana, and Kauai. Let’s just say, this sunshine has me adding a little more color into our family’s wardrobe – I know, I know – it’s a little shocking. When warm weather hits, all I can think about wearing are soft flowy dresses that are light and airy, beautiful linen, and having that go-to pair of sandals that work with just about anything. This is one thing I love about Old Navy – they constantly have these pieces available for everyone in the family. Since I’m only seven weeks away from having baby girl, it’s quite essential to have a few pieces on rotation that I can count on each morning. My must have pieces this month are this white dress, tees, and Old Navy jeans. They are a MUST people! I live in them and swear by them. If you are pregnant run, don’t walk to get yourself a pair in several washes. What’s the most important about the change of weather and season, is that our family gets outside to enjoy the simple joys of impromptu trips to the beach or park – and most importantly – have fun with each other. So, embrace this time of year and go have some silly moments with your loved ones! - Food: Three Killer SF Cookbooks
I honestly wanted to jump up and down when I realized that three of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco had published cookbooks recently. If you live in San Francisco, you probably know them. If you don’t live here, I promise you, these cookbooks will add a new dimension and spark your meals! All three have some of my favorite meals and yet each one is distinctly different than the others. Burma Superstar This little restaurant is nestled in amongst the cozy neighborhood of Clement Street in the inner Richmond. My family and I go often, as it’s walking distance from our home. Famous for their explosions of flavorful and spicy food, Burma Superstar has food from Myanmar with influences from neighboring India and China, as well as Thailand and Laos. The great thing about this cookbook, is that the recipes have been simplified and streamlined, so even a novice cook can successfully execute them. Tartine All Day The beloved bakery in the Mission District of San Francisco, Tartine is rarely without a long line down the street and let’s not even talk about the line at Tartine Manufactory. Always worth the wait, this new cookbook by Elisabeth Prueitt, is an all-inclusive look at cooking with whole foods. Prueitt does a good job of providing professional advice without overwhelming you with too many details. I was thrilled to have the recipes for my favorites the Granola and Greenest Goddess Dressing. Nopalito: A Mexican Kitchen Having grown up for a portion of my childhood in Mexico and having a Mexican father, I’m kind of a food snob when it comes to Mexican food. That being said, for the past ten years, I’ve been frequenting Nopalito in San Francisco for excellent Mexican dishes. This would be a cookbook for anyone who wants to try preparing genuine Mexican cuisine. Some of my favorites are included in the book – corn with crema, mole, and the best aquas frescas! - Style: Spring Sunglasses Update
Each year, as the weather warms up I crave a new pair of sunglasses. Does anyone else feel the same way? This year in particular I’ve been on the hunt for a new go-to pair. Maybe it’s because I’ve been wearing the same black pair for three years but it’s time to give myself a little update. Especially now that I’ve scratched mine. Throughout my hunt, I found a handful of options I loved, but alas I wanted something that I could wear with any outfit. I’m one of those people that can’t switch out sunglasses on a daily basis. The winning pair are are the Halliday from Madewell. I love the milky color frame. Although I’m still coveting a few that I passed up. I wanted to share a few favorites I found along my quest for this year’s sunglasses. I’m ready for the sunshine and summer-like days ahead. Do you have a favorite pair of sunglasses this season? - 5 Tips on Creating a Better Finance System
There are a lot of perks when it comes to owning and running your own business, but one area that I’ve always struggled with is the finance/accounting portion of the job. Let’s just say the creative side of me would rather work an 80 hour week than deal with accounting, taxes, sales taxes, etc. When I became self-employed over five years ago (holy moly I can’t believe it has been that long!), I didn’t know what went into the accounting portion of the job. The first few years I quickly figured out that I needed to pay WAY more taxes and I need to find a system that worked for me. Insert Quickbooks Self-Employed. When I converted EVERYTHING over to Quickbooks Self-Employed my entire work life became easier when it came to billing clients, tracking payments, capturing receipts, categorizing expenses – basically the whole enchilada. I get questions from readers and friends about how I deal with finances on a weekly basis and thought it I’d share a few helpful tips on how I’ve been able to make my finance life easier on myself. 1. Create a Business Account First order of business is to open up a business checking and saving account in order to keep everything organized. This helps me out a lot when it comes to tracking what expenses are business verse personal. You don’t want to get the two mixed up. 2. Track Your Income Through Quickbooks Self-Employed Why I didn’t do this right away with my business? I started using Quickbooks Self-Employed after running my business with an excel spreadsheet for two years. When I switched to Quickbooks Self-Employed it was like day and night. You can link your bank accounts, PayPal, file 1099s, and more. Each month I go through to track my income, expenses, what invoices have been paid, and what payments are overdue. It’s made the entire process that much sweeter. Since I’m running the blog and design business it became difficult to track when payments were due – net 30, net 60, direct deposit, etc. Now, whenever I sign a contract for a new campaign I immediately put together an invoice in Quickbooks Self-Employed. With design clients it’s essential to have an organized invoicing system in place since we are purchasing pieces for them. What’s also amazing – Quickbooks Self-Employed tracks the sales tax that is owed to the state. This is quite essential in the design industry. 3. Put Aside a Percentage of Each Payment for Taxes Being self-employed means nothing is taken out of the income I receive – no taxes or 401K contribution. With that being said, it’s my responsibility to put a percentage aside from everything I make each year. At the beginning I was HORRIBLE at putting anything aside for taxes. I thought to myself – man, I have all of this money coming in and then taxes hit me like a brick wall. Fast forward to learning my lesson and I put a percentage of each payment away for taxes. My husband and I basically sit down each year to forecast how much I’ll be making and then decide that we should put aside about 30-35% of my income. In the end, this will lower any amount that you owe. This helps you with not getting hit with a HUGE amount of taxes that are due in April. 4. Be On Top of Your Tax Payment Schedule Knowing what your tax payment schedule is vital. I add these into my calendar each year so that I don’t miss any payments. When I first started the business it was bi-annual but now I pay each quarter, which always seems to creep up on me. Believe me, making these payments is essential. If you don’t think you are paying enough each quarter or every six months, pay a little more. It’ll help lighten up that tax payment come April or you may even get money back! 5. Start Prepping Your Annual Taxes Early Each year we seem to get better and better about prepping our taxes earlier. Of course, we usually end up turning them in by early February but it takes a while to get everything together. Luckily, when it comes to filing Quickbooks Self-Employed has everything in order for us to file. You just want to make sure you have everything organized and accounted for – your income, expenses, did you make any donations? Do you have contract workers (if so, then you need to send out 1099’s) – Quickbooks has everything organized in your account to make it as easy as it can get. So, whether you’ve already filed your 2016 taxes, asked for an extension, or are deciding how you want to start tracking your finances I highly recommend signing up for Quickbooks Self-Employed – to help you make your accounting life easier. It’s saved me year after year! This post is a partnership with Quickbooks Self-Employed. All opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting sponsored posts that keep Sacramento Street doors open. - April Moodboard
Although we are more than halfway through April – this month has been one to remember. First, I completely forgot about this third trimester phase where I get super productive because I know the baby is coming. Getting all my ducks in a row is the name of the game until she arrives. The studio is bustling with client projects, installs, photo shoots – you name it! Last week, I went to LA for one last sourcing trip before baby girl arrives. It was the perfect girls trip. The sun was shining, the company was great and I left feeling completely inspired. I’ll be sharing more details next week on my favorite spots. Since we’ve had such gloomy weather here in San Francisco, all I’m craving are neutrals, whites and light colors in everything. It’s amazing how the weather can influence so much in your life. I’m so ready for summer whites (like this eyelet madewell top), sun hats, and the carefree way everyone feels on a warm day. What are you craving this month? - Creating A Spring Herb Garden
Living in an apartment in San Francisco means I don’t have a garden. That being said, I do have a front porch where I love to have plants. This year, I decided it would be fun to try my hand at a potted herb garden. I went to my local nursery and found a variety of herbs I enjoy cooking with – mint, thyme, oregano, rosemary and basil. Farrow & Ball provided the paint for me to try out some of their new key colors for 2017 as part of their #CrateOutdoors campaign. These colors are spot on for spring, with a vibrant and fresh new look. I painted a wooden apple crate with their signature color – Studio Green. It’s the perfect spot for me to store my gardening supplies – a watering can, spade, moss, and seeds to plant in my pots. I also painted a clay pot in the All White, a color I will be using in several design projects coming up soon. These two colors go perfectly with the outside area of my apartment. I also painted popsicle sticks in their colors Radicchio and Hay and then wrote the names of the herbs on the sticks. Studio Green Studio Green is a color that will grow on you. The color is the darkest of greens and changes dramatically in different light. I especially like it outside with light, where you can see the green in it. Studio Green is the color of the original studio for Farrow & Ball. All White I am trilled by this color of white. All White is the perfect white void of any tint. It has the softest shade without being to yellow or blue. I am planning to paint kitchen cabinets with this color and I think it will be stunning. Radicchio I have noticed pink being used more frequently in design and this shade – Raddichio – is perfection. It is bright without overwhelming and it has a modern happy feel to it. Hay Hay is the softest light golden color you could imagine. This is a happy color that would look beautiful on a kitchen wall or even as the color for a home. It reminds me of the golden color the hills turn outside of San Francisco in the spring and summer. While I may have no garden space, I can take advantage of my porch and have a small manageable garden in pots. And the beautiful colors of Farrow & Ball help to make it fun and contemporary. Happy planting and painting! This post is a partnership with Farrow & Ball. All opinions are my own. Thanks for supporting sponsored posts that keep Sacramento Street doors open. #lifestyle
- Real Talk / Real Moms: Morning Routine
When I heard our topic this month was morning routines, I started to ponder how we spend our mornings around here. While it varies, depending upon whether Eric is in town or not, mornings are actually one of our favorite times as a family. I shower in the evenings and as a result, there is less stress in getting out the door in the morning. For the most part, our alarm clock is Jackson – who wakes up between 5:30 – 6:30. He will crawl into bed with us for a few minutes to snuggle before announcing: “Mama up! Papa up!” We prepare our morning tea and Jackson usually enjoys eating some fruit while playing with his beloved trains. Eric then takes Jackson for a run (one of their favorite times together) while I tidy up the house, prepare snacks for Jackson to take on his daily adventures, and get myself dressed. While we rise early, it means we don’t feel rushed in the morning. There obviously days that are more stressful – especially when one of us is out of town or I have an early meeting, but most of the time, mornings are our calmest time of the day. And while I’d love to get a workout in or have more “me time” in the morning – I’m cherishing these mornings with Jackson before we become a family of four. I can’t wait to enjoy the walk to preschool that will begin this fall! I’d love to know, what do your mornings look like? - Monthly To Do List: April
With a little over two months before baby girl arrives, I’ve been in full time nesting mode at home. Every closet has been organized, goodwill bags have been taken, and the furniture for her room should be arriving in the next few weeks! Spring always brings the urge to clear out the clutter. Do you get the spring cleaning urge? APRIL TO DO LIST Paint babies room. Install furniture in baby girls room. Go to pilates – may seem easy but life gets busy and I often end up canceling. Plan photo shoots for a few projects. Put together birth plan for hospital. Each month it's nice to have these small to-do lists to look at throughout the month. I’m especially excited about this month’s list. What do you want to get done this month? Photo taken for Sacramento Street #lifestyle
