- Getaway: Parker Sonoma House
Last weekend I drove up to wine country for a girls getaway weekend. Sonoma was the destination. It was Kelley Moore’s birthday and I knew that it would be a weekend I wouldn’t forget. As I pulled up to the house that she rented from her dear friend Amy, my jaw dropped – the house was beautiful. Friends, it was perfection – from the fluffy beds you just wanted to take a nap in, to the modern fire pit, and then there was the pool. It was built and designed after the pool at Carneros Inn (which is one of my favorite places to Getaway). We spent the entire weekend at the house – each morning we cooked beautiful brunches, soaked up some sunshine during the day and then got dressed up for dinners in. Saturday night Kelley hosted a dinner at the house that was stunning – you can see peaks of it on instagram, but the table top will soon be displayed on Mark & Grahams site. All in all, this getaway was blissful. I love going away somewhere but feeling at home and this is exactly how I felt at the Parker Sonoma house. If you’re planning a trip up to Sonoma or Napa I highly recommend booking this house on VRBO. I can only imgaine how magical this house is in September and October – the best time to come to Sonoma in my opinion. Hope you enjoyed this look into another Getaway. Photos by Caitlin Flemming “Getaway” will be appearing on Sacramento Street to document my travels. #travel
- On the Menu: Baked Cauliflower & Brussel Sprout Crisps
You know when you have a dish at a restaurant and then you immediately want to recreate it? When Susan of Peas and Love and I tasted the Brussel Sprout chips at Marlowe in SOMA we were obsessed. We talked about them all the time, craved them – it was bad! So, Susan decided to recreate them for us with a twist – adding cauliflower into the mix. These are delicious and quite addicting. I could eat it for lunch every day! Baked Cauliflower & Brussel Sprout Crisps Instructions 1/2 a Head of Cauliflower, chopped 1 cup Brussel Sprouts, de-leaved (cut off the ends and separate all the leaves, layer by layer) 3 Tbsp Olive Oil 2 Tbsp Pure Maple Syrup Juice of 1/2 a Lemon 1/2 a tsp Cayenne Pepper Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. On a baking sheet lay down the Cauliflower and Brussel Sprouts. In a bowl, bring Oil, Syrup, Lemon and Pepper together and mix well. Spread the liquid mixture over the veggies, and use your hands to make sure Cauliflower and Sprouts are coated evenly. 2. Bake for 20 minutes, until the Brussel Sprout leaves start to brown. Remove from oven, let cool, and sprinkle over a light drizzle of salt to taste. Serve, and enjoy! Recipe & Food Prep by Susan Whang / Photography & Styling by Caitlin Flemming #entertaining #cooking
- a brand new week . . .
Happy Monday! After a relaxing and refreshing weekend up in Sonoma celebrating good friend Kelley Moore’s birthday, I’m ready for this week to begin. We’ve been having beautiful spring time weather here in SF and I’m definitely going to take advantage of it before I leave for Arizona. Friends, I can’t tell you how excited I am to see Eric – he has been down at Spring Training since late February. This is definitely the rough part about being a baseball wife, but I love that he is working in his dream job and I now have the luxury of working when I travel. A little inspiration for this week – a beautiful necklace I picked up while shooting Joanna Williams workspace, the new Living Etc., and lastly these anemones that have been sitting on my coffee table. What has been inspiring you? This week we have a delicious recipe, a new flower series starting with Natalie Bowen and another Getaway feature (the Sonoma house I had the pleasure of staying at this weekend). I hope all of you have a fabulous week! Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle
- Workspace: Heather Taylor
When I first came across Heather’s blog LA in Bloom I was in awe of her beautiful sense of style and aesthetic. Not to mention to her effortless way of hosting a party – something I strive to do. When I found out Heather started her own textile company I thought to myself – what doesn’t she do? By day Taylor owns and runs a beautiful gallery in Culver City with her husband. On the side she started her beautiful textile company for entertaining – think beautiful napkins, place mats and runners. I of course fell in love with the all white pattern, but her mix of colors is breathtaking. Learn more about Heather through her lovely interview below. Where did your interest in art begin? When I was growing up my parents used to drag me and my sister to museums, which probably set the stage for my interest in art. The passion really developed in high school when I signed up for photography class. I fell in love with it. Up until that point I was an average student who wasn’t really great at anything. Photography was my first passion and the first thing at which I excelled. I still love taking pictures. When did you and your husband decide to open a gallery? We opened the gallery in 2006 after meeting a group of artists in LA who we loved and didn’t have a place to show their work. We wanted to create a welcoming space for emerging artists to show their work and for young collectors to begin building collections. We also had a dream of turning it into a kind of creative lab, where different types of events could occur – readings, fashion presentations, music performances. When did you decide you wanted to start a textile line? I love textiles and have been collecting and making them for years. I am a long time knitter and weaver and people are always asking if they can buy what I make. The first weaving project I was really proud of was a vividly-hued striped table runner. It took me 8 months to make by hand and a few of my friends wanted to buy it. This was part of the inspiration for the line. I also love entertaining and setting a pretty table is one of my favorite parts of the whole experience of having people over. I couldn’t find linens that I was in love with (other than while traveling) so I decided I would design my own. Where did the inspiration for your textiles come from? From my travels. I have seen the most amazing linens in Greece and Mexico and the daily tradition of using beautiful linens in a casual way is very inspiring. Even if you’re just eating dinner by yourself on a Tuesday night. Why not make it beautiful? You’re an artist in your own right, what medium do you find your creative outlet in? The fiber arts, mainly weaving and knitting. Also cooking and flower arranging. You mentioned you love entertaining, what is it about entertaining that you love so much? Because it’s a way to show your guests that you love them. And it’s a creative outlet in its own right. What are three thing you always have on a table? A table runner, flowers and sea salt. If you were to host a dinner party, who would your dream guest be? Nora Ephron A huge thank you to Heather for letting us get a glimpse inside her lovely workspace! And if you don’t already follow her on instagram you most definitely should – you’ll be completely inspired by the pictures she posts. Photos by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle #interiors
- On the Menu: Lavender Granola
Breakfast is one of the hardest meals for me to take the time to make and eat. This past fall Eric and I started making our own homemade granola – it’s easy and you can put whatever you love in it. But I found that making it made me see all of the sugar that went into it. That’s when I turned to Susan of Peas and Love for a new and healthier version of what I was making. This delicious Lavender Granola is a burst of spring in your mouth and topped with some berries it makes my heart sing. Hope you enjoy this as much as Susan and I did last Saturday! Lavender Granola Ingredients 2 cups Oats 1/4 cup Flax Seeds 3/4 Nuts of choice or mix them all! (A mix of almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds) 1 tsp Vanilla 4 Tbsp Honey 1 Tbsp Lavender Buds Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, bring all ingredients together and mix well. Spread evenly on a baking sheet and bake for 40-45 minutes until golden, dry and toasty. Let cool, then transfer to a mason jar to store. Serve over yogurt and top with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey. Recipe & Food Prep by Susan Whang / Photography & Styling by Caitlin Flemming #entertaining #cooking
- Spotlight: Interview with Leslie Williamson
(Finn Juhl) (Alvar Aalto) (Bruno Mathsson) (Gae Aulenti) Today I’m thrilled to bring all of you an interview I did with the ever so talented Leslie Williamson. I’ve known Leslie for quite a few years and I’m always in awe of what she does – the way she works, her beautiful photographs, and her lovely personality. When Leslie set out on her journey to start photographing her second book, Handcrafted Modern Europe, I jumped for joy – her first book, Handcrafted Modern is one of my favorite coffee table books. When I found out that Leslie had started a Kickstarter program to raise money to help fund the end of this second books journey, I immediately started brainstorming ways to help Leslie achieve her $41,000 goal. She’s only $11,000 dollars away and has two weeks left to raise the money. I reached out to Leslie about sharing a sneak peek and interview with all of you to share the news about this book. If you don’t know Leslie, I promise you’ll be in love with her photography and her books by the end of this interview. When did you first realize you wanted to become a photographer? Did you have an aha moment? I actually did not have an Aha moment at all…it was really an evolution. I was always doing something artistic in school – flute, dance, graphic design…Out of High school I went to art school and majored in Fashion Design which was my plan since I was about 8 years old (a very odd career choice at the time…). But I quickly realized I had no patience for drawing. So I decided I would be a photographer “because it was quicker.” I always laugh about this one, because it is not quicker at all, but something about photography suited me and it stuck. and here I am… When you walk into a home you’re going to photograph what do you look for first? I usually ask for a little tour of the house. That is the best way to start because people always share interesting things about their own house. There are always objects/areas that speak to me – little sections of a bookcase or a chair, it can be anything really – so I’ll ask about them. And I am always looking at the light, where it is nicest, how the house is oriented so I can figure out how the light will move during the day and I will move through the house to shoot it in the best possible way. Did you always dream of photographing and writing a book or books? Actually, I never ever thought that I would write a book in a million years. I only wrote for myself before Handcrafted Modern. I always knew that I would publish books of my photographs, but the writing still surprises me. I really love it though. Your photography has so much meaning behind it – I’m always in awe of the beauty. What kind of camera do you use? Do you have a secret you can share? Thanks so much for that! Those kind of things – meaning and beauty -are really about the way I see things and somehow it translates into the image. So my cameras – I have been using a Mamiya RZ67 for years and continue to – are really just tools. No matter what camera I shoot with, there is always an underlying emotional quality to my work. At least I hope there is, and that is one of those things I am really grateful for, but I don’t know that I can explain it. So I’m not sure I have any particular tips… Tell us the story behind these images? The images here are a preview from four of the houses in my upcoming book Handcrafted Modern Europe. Alvar Aalto, Finn Juhl, Bruno Mathsson and Gae Aulenti. Alvar Aalto, a Finnish architect and designer, and Finn Juhl, a Danish furniture designer – both of these homes are museums now and wonderfully intact. The Bruno Mathsson house is not open to the public, so being there was special even though he passed away awhile ago. It still has everything in there. Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti was still living in this apartment when I shot. Sadly she passed away about a month after I was there. So the images of her space are very special. I’m so proud of what you’ve done thus far. Tell us about the Kickstarter program you started in order to finish your second book! Yes, the Kickstarter…I am in the middle of raising funds to finish Handcrafted Modern Europe. So many don’t realize that projects like this – all original photography, the travel involved, etc. – are really expensive to produce. So I need help to finish it up! The Kickstarter will help fund mainly the travel expenses and the post production costs. Plus documenting these homes in detail is so important! The books are the vehicle for me to show them to as many people as possible, but I see my work as very long term. This is my life’s work. I am building a library of images documenting these homes of designers and architects – to see how they live with their own work – and when I am finished on this earth, I hope the images will be there for other generations to see and learn how these amazing people lived. If you live in San Francisco, join Leslie for a special in-depth slideshow presentation to showcase even more photos from her upcoming book. You’ll see inside the homes of notable architects and designers in Europe including Alvar, Aalto, Finn Juhl, Bruno Mathsson and more. It is one night only at Heath Ceramics in the Mission. Thursday, March 7, 2013 7 – 9 pm Slideshow begins at 7:30pm Heath Ceramics 2900 18th Street, San Francisco, CA 94110 please RSVP to lwillphoto77@gmail.com A HUGE thank you to Leslie for taking the time to answer these questions. I hope to see some of you Thursday, but if you can’t make it be sure to pop over to purchase an advance signed copy of her book. Photos by Leslie Williamson #interiors

- Getaway: Four Seasons Biltmore
Heaven on Earth is probably the best way to describe the Four Seasons Biltmore. We arrived on a gloomy and rainy day, which is rare for Santa Barbara, but the ocean was greeting us with its beauty. As we drove into the hotel driveway we were in awe of the beautiful architecture of the Spanish style hotel. It instantly brought back memories of my childhood in Mexico. Some of my favorite memories as a child are staying in haciendas with beautiful decor and history. The Biltmore is nestled in charming Montecito, which is just 10 miles south of Santa Barbara. As you wind your way through the beautiful resort you find yourself getting lost in the stunning gardens with magnolia trees, palm trees and flowers growing as far as the eye can see. What makes the Biltmore unique are the breathtaking views of the ocean. The first night as we were trying to decide where to go for dinner, we walked through the stunning lobby and saw that the Bella Vista restaurant in the hotel had a front seat to watch the ocean as the sun was setting. How could we pass that up? After a breathtaking sunset we enjoyed homemade pasta that melted in our mouths. It was the perfect end to our magical day. The following day we enjoyed a casual walk by the ocean to get one last glimpse of our view. After we check out of the hotel we of course had to stop into our favorite shops in town – Rooms and Gardens, Diani, and Dressed in Santa Barbara and Botanik in Summerland. All of these are a must! As we left to continue our road trip down to LA we agreed that another stay at the Biltmore was definitely in order – it was the perfect home away from home. Photos by Caitlin Flemming “Getaway” will be appearing on Sacramento Street to document my travels. I’m hoping to make it a monthly feature. If you have a favorite hotel in your city that you think should be featured please leave a comment or email me. I’ll be traveling a far amount in 2013 and hopefully it’ll be to a city you recommend! #travel
