- Blooms in Season: December
How time flies . . . I can’t believe this is our last Blooms in Season post of the year. We’re finishing off the year with one of my favorite arrangements yet. Seriously, if I could get married again it would be in the winter and I would walk down the aisle with this bouquet. Not kidding! The mix of greenery, anemones, paper whites and ranunculus is incredible. When I first came to Natalie about collaborating on an arrangement for the Kate Spade holiday tabletop I knew I wanted something white (no surprise there!), a bit of whimsy, and something elegant for the holiday season. Natalie blew me away, which isn’t surprising. Now here’s Natalie with more details about this December’s arrangement! What lead to your inspiration for this arrangement? I love using holiday greens this time of year and redwood is a favorite of mine, as I had four redwood trees in the backyard of my childhood home. I love the tiny pinecones on their branches and think that they feel very festive without being too overpowering. I decided that a white and green, with a hint of black palate was appropriate for this time of year without feeling Christmasy. What is behind the name “Paperwhite Narcissus”? Paperwhites are part of the genus “narcissus”, which also includes the name daffodil and jonquil. While there is no proof of how they got their name, it is thought that they were named after the Greek myth Narcissus who was obsessed with his own reflection. The flowers in this family have a slightly down-turned head, as if they are looking in to a pool of water showing their own reflection, and this is how the bloom is thought to get its name. You used ranunculus. Are those in season? During the winter months when less is being grown locally, I tend to buy more imported flowers. I buy locally as much as possible, which isn’t hard in this part of California. When it is colder, I do find myself buying imported blooms that come from warmer climates. Any hints for someone wanting to put together an easy holiday centerpiece? If you have a Christmas Tree and trim it when putting it up, use the extra stems as a base for your arrangement. you can also take apart the end of a garland or pick up a few stems at your local grocery store or flower shop. If you chose a long lasting flower, such as the narcissus or amaryllis (they are the same family), and make sure that they are not fully open when you purchase them, you will be able to enjoy the arrangement for a couple weeks. I love a long lasting arrangement! A huge thank you to Natalie for bringing us inspiration for holidays and for bringing us such beautiful arrangements each month. - Layer It: Cold Weather Uniform
Alright friends, it’s cold everywhere – Dallas, San Francisco, Philly, you name the city, it’s cold. Well, except Florida . . . Eric is gloating about the 70 degree weather. I wanted to share with you my cold weather uniform that has been keeping me toasty in this chilly weather. You can’t really go wrong when you bundle up in a scarf, hat, gloves and warm jacket. I always think that I look like a big puffy ballon when I do. I find that when I have to bundle so many layers it’s good to keep it slim on the bottom and then wear a cute top or sweater underneath for when you get inside. I hope this inspires you these next few days or weeks of cold weather. 1. Jimmy Jimmy Mid-Rise Jeans 2. Black Long Sleeve Oblique Zipper Coat 3. Cable Knit Pompom Hat 4. - Hosting the Holidays with Kate Spade
The first week of December has come and gone – entirely too quickly in my opinion! With that being said, it’s time to get prepped for all of the holiday parties that await us at our house this season. Since it’s finally big enough to host more than four people. The holidays are in FULL effect and it’s time to do this thing with the help of Kate Spade of course! This season when prepping for the holidays and our holiday dinner party I wanted to find everything from one source – paper goods, fine china and gifts for guests that were fun and special that I could use again. Insert the help from Kate Spade. They have an amazing collection of fine china that is elegant with beautiful graphics, place cards that are unique, wine glass numbers that you can use at multiple soirees you host and I was even able to find gifts for everyone on my dinner party list. When I sit down to design a tabletop I write out everything I’d love to do with the table (flowers, something unexpected, possibly a menu, centerpiece around the flowers, etc). This gets my “Let’s do this!” attitude into gear! Sometimes you have to turn to others to help you create your vision. For the flowers, Natalie Bowen and I created an arrangement that was white, whimsical and had a bit of holiday flair to it. It was placed in a large mint julep style vase to bring out the silver tones of the Kate Spade signature china. I personally love the mix of anemones with the greenery. More details on this arrangement coming up this week for our Blooms in Season post. For the menus, I had envisioned from the beginning doing it in calligraphy. I reached out to Laura Hooper to execute these gorgeous menu’s that are beautiful enough to frame. You can easily create something similar with beautiful ivory paper and a gold pen – it most certainly doesn’t need to be done in calligraphy, but showing guests what they’ll be having is an added touch that guests don’t expect when coming to a dinner party. To add a bit more whimsy to the table I called in my dear friend Myka – she’s the master at creating anything you have envisioned in your head. I wanted to use different ribbons that would inspire guests because each piece could be used to wrap a gift. I personally love wrapping all of my gifts in white, silver and gold. And then to round everything out we paired a pewter runner and charcoal napkins from La Tavola Linens – my go-to source for all of my dinner parties. (the rissa dress – on sale now!) This time of year is a time to be thankful for your family and friends that surround and support you through thick and thin. Celebrate each of them with a token gift or a little soiree – anything to show them that you care and appreciate them. All of these gifts below would make perfect ideas for anyone – I especially love these pencils with little sayings on them “From Me to You” and “Yours Sincerely.” Now it’s time for you to pop open some bubbly, host your own party, and pick out a few gifts for your friends and family. The holidays go quickly, but just remember two things - enjoy yourself each moment and go into it with a “Let’s do this” attitude and it will all work out. I’ve definitely been wearing my layers of scarves, hats and wool coats to keep me toasty through this winter jet stream. What have you been doing to stay warm? A few things inspiring me – the new issue of Elle Decoration UK, Christmas decorations have been spread across the house, paper whites are making our apartment smell divine and lastly, this scarf has been my go-to when running out into the cold.
