  • Layer It: Warm Weather Getaway

Usually around this time of year I start day-dreaming of beach getaways – Cabo, Tulum, Kauai, just about anywhere that doesn’t involve fog, rain or snow. While we thought we’d be enjoying warmer temperatures here in Texas, that hasn’t been the case. It’s been a bit chilly – in fact, it’s supposed to snow today . . . not what we had in mind when planning this trip. I know many of you have been in bone chilling weather with feet of snow on the ground and some of you are in California enjoying abnormally warm weather, but we’re all thinking and planning out our next trip to the beach. These are coming with me on my next trip to paradise. Are you dreaming of a trip to a warm weather destination right now? 1.) Joie Alicia Top 2.) Denim Short in Dark Von Wash 3.) Stripe Market Tote 4.) Loeffler Randall Sawyer Sandles 5.) Bauble Bar Chevron Swing Pendant Necklace 6.) Chambray Baseball Cap 7.) Stripe Underwire Top and Bottom 8.) • a brand new week . . .

This past weekend was pure bliss. Meeting the newest addition to the Flemming clan was beyond what I expected. He was precious and we’re already planning our next visit. It was hard to say goodbye today but we’re off to Austin to spend a few days with Camille and her family. We’re excited for delicious meals, hitting up some of my favorite spots and I cannot wait to see Camille’s soon-to-be new office space! If you have any favorite spots in Austin I should go, please pass them along! I hope all of you have a wonderful last week of January – can you believe we’re days away from February? • Layer It: Snow Day

While we’re having unseasonably warm weather here in California, most of the country is under a cold snap or the “Polar Vortex.” I grew up with seasons, so living with these warmer winters makes me miss the snow and colder temperatures, but I’m not complaining. I’ve been longing for a snow day and dreaming up what I would wear if I decided to make a trip up to Tahoe. I hope this brings you a little snow day inspiration where ever you might be. 1.) • a brand new week . . .

This weekend was magnificent. The weather felt as though it was June (I’m calling it June-ary). I got so many items crossed off my never ending to-do list (including a little painting project), and ended it with an amazing dinner with Eric at Frances. Honestly, this summer-like weather gave me a little skip in my step and helped me start off the week feeling re-inspired to tackle anything that comes my way. Do you ever need weekends like that? I wish every single one could be that way. While so much brought me inspiration this weekend, I have to say the blooming flowers across the city are spectacular. Especially these tulip magnolia branches. The colors that are popping up around me have me smitten. I hope all of you have a beautiful week ahead! Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle

  • Layer It: Weekend Hike

One of my favorite past-times with girlfriends is taking walks or hikes around the city or in the Marin Headlands. Granted, we’ve had our misfortunes of not calculating a route and getting stuck without water or food about 10 miles from our car. Yes, this actually happened and we had to call a cab – it was embarrassing, but my college besties and I recount this experience all the time. Now, we pick routes we know and don’t venture down a “different” route for fun unless we are fully prepared. Honestly, it’s a time to get outside, chat about everything, unload and just be unplugged from everything. The ocean views, sea air and views take my breath away around every turn. I live in a priceless city for exploring. That’s why I want to urge all of you to gather your girlfriends for a weekend hike. Whether it’s to a lake, around your city for an “urban” hike or in the hills – you’ll cherish these moments. Here’s my go-to outfits for a casual hike: 1.) Nill Lotan Over-sized Sweater 2.) MIH Slim Boyfriend Jeans 3.) Splendid Stripe Infinity Scarf 4.) Excursion Quilted Vest 5.) Black and White Knit Beanie 6.) Warby Parker Carmichael Sunglasses 7.) New Balance Backpack 501 Classics More weekend walking or hiking classics. #style

  • a brand new week . . .

Happy Monday! After a whirlwind first week of 2014, I was ready to lay low this weekend. Did you feel the same? Luckily Saturday brought us gloomy weather, which made it quite easy to stay in for the day. It was utterly delightful. I relish the weekends I’m able to spend in sweats enjoying the comfort of my own home. A little bit about what’s inspiring me this week – have you seen the book Beyond Chic yet? If not, it’s a must for everybody’s library. It’s full of stunning Fashion Designers homes. Other items I’m adoring; A new project has brought beautiful neutral fabrics into my life, this Moroccan bowl sits in my office and brings back memories of my fall trip, letterpress cards sitting on my desk for thank you notes to be written and lastly, this weekend’s roses brought a little beauty into our apartment. Last week, we had a handful of fabulous posts – a new series debuted called On the Hunt, I shared Madeline Weinrib’s stunning showroom and studio (I want to move in!), the team came up with their favorite apps everyone should download and lastly, be sure to pop over to Euro Lighting to check out my latest round-up. So if you missed them, be sure to check them out! There is a lot in store this week so check back often. I hope all of you have a productive week ahead. Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle

  • Top 12 Apps to Download in 2014

Do you ever wonder what apps everyone has on their phones? There are millions out there now. Most people have their favorites – Instagram, Facebook, Google Maps, etc. but what else do they love? We sat around and dug through our own phones to bring you our favorite apps the Sacramento Street team is using. It sure was interesting voting for our top twelve. After chatting about what apps we’re constantly tapping on, engaging with and using, this is our final list. We’re bringing you our top twelve apps to download to make your life more productive, easier, prettier, and just plain cool! We had a total geek out moment. We hope these are already in your regular rotation or become part of your life. 1.) Over: Ever wonder how people add text to their images. Look no further, Over adds beautiful text to your photos straight from your iPhone or iPad. 2.) Postmates: I should warn you – we are quite addicted to this one! With Postmates you can get your lunch, groceries or even office supplies delivered in under an hour. So, if you are craving the sandwich, sushi or burrito from across town you can have it without leaving your desk. We use it constantly for picking up items for clients – it means I can work while the items get’s delivered. Honestly, it’s brilliant! It’s available in most larger cities across the US. 3.) Dropbox: This is probably a common one most people have but we use it everyday. It functions like Google Drive. It’s a handy way to store and share large files with coworkers, creatives you’re working with or family. It’s also a great way to stay organized and have access to your work while you are on the go traveling. 4.) Color 911: The app allows you to download inspirational color palettes as well as create your own. If you’re a design enthusiast this ones for you! We love its ability to pull colors from photos you take on the go. So if you are in a house you love but are too embarrassed to ask the color, there is no need to fret anymore. 5.) Flipboard: Looking for a way to read all of your favorite news, magazines, blogs, and sites? Flipboard allows you to curate all of your favorite articles from various locations into one magazine. All of your daily reads are waiting for you in the morning with a big cup of tea. 6.) Uber: This is the new taxi service. Calling a cab is now just a touch of the screen. This app keeps your credit card on file so when you request the cab they already know who you are and you don’t need to carry any cash (it can be a little dangerous when you don’t want to take the bus or subway). The app tracks your cab for you and gives you the option to split the fare with your friend before even stepping foot into the car. They have elevated how everyone gets around town. 7.) Lumosity: Rather than the basic games like Candy Crush (sorry Eric!), this app is a game for exercising your brain. It’s a web based personal training program that activates your brain with problem solving while also tracking your progress. 8.) Mailbox: Imagine all of your email accounts in one place. This app is a lifesaver! Mailbox has created a way to simplify and organize your email. They have recently joined forces with dropbox so hopefully this will make sharing large files via email easier in the near future. 9.) Snapseed: Ever look back at a photo you took and want to post but it’s not straight? This is the best photo editing app created by Nik Software. The app includes a wide range of tools for editing images and sharing files. 10.) Evernote: This app goes beyond the traditional sticky note. With Evernote, you can save webpages, collaborate with friends, and remember the things you like- all while syncing the information with your devices. So get rid of all those loose papers around your desk – now you can have them in your pocket through your phone! 11.) VSCO Cam: All of us use VSCO Cam when editing photos. VSCO Cam has beautiful filters that don’t overpower your photos. 12.) Spotify: This is one of many amazing apps out there for music. The reason we love this one in particular is for the range of music it offers and the ability to see what kind of music your friends are listening to. So when you’re wanting to get introduced to a new band – pop over to your friends accounts to see what is on their playlist. Or if you find an awesome new band you want to share, you can send it over to all of your friends. Now, we want to hear what apps are your favorites? Are there some you can’t live without that we need to download right away? Graphic by Heather Day #lifestyle

  • Workspace: Madeline Weinrib

Madeline Weinrib’s design aesthetic holds a special place in my heart. I vividly remember the first time I came across Madeline’s stunning collection of rugs and fabrics in ABC Carpet & Home. It was my freshman year of college and my mom and I were on an inspiration trip in New York in the dead of winter – it was freezing. When we walked into ABC Home it was as though we had walked into a toy store at the age of three. Our jaws dropped. To begin with, one entire floor of the store had been converted into a red tent. Women were invited to come to this reprieve for a rest from their hectic world. It was one of those moments that totally solidified that I have to work in a creative space. When I happened upon Madeline’s textiles and rugs I was in captivated – the colors, details, everything was so authentic and beautiful. From that day forward I knew that I wanted a little bit of Madeline Weinrib in any home I lived in or designed. This fall, I was planning a trip to New York and I reached out to Madeline Weinrib about featuring her in this series – she jumped at the chance. I was over the moon and a little nervous. When I arrived at her 2,700 sq ft showroom on lower Fifth Avenue I was in awe. Friends, it was beyond what I had imagined – the rugs, textiles, pillows, and so many more goodies were being showcased that were out of this world. Quite honestly, I wanted to move right in. I was welcomed by Madeline and her assistants with open arms. To have the opportunity to hear the stories behind where theirinspiration comes from, where the fabrics are made and by whom, along with the history and evolution of her rug collection was one of my favorite design experiences to date. To hear things first hand from a woman I’ve admired for years was a once in a lifetime experience. As a designer it’s important to be inspired by other creative people and Madeline Weinrib is definitely at the top of my list. Her work is breathtaking. Now, it’s time for you to get a glimpse into her beautiful showroom and studio and also get to know Madeline Weinrib herself from our lovely conversation. I noticed you have a background in fine art and painting and later got involved in creating your carpets and fabrics. How did your training as an artist help to form your aesthetic? I initially approached textiles in the same way I approached painting. As a fine artist, it’s important to cultivate your own point of view and create a body of work that reflects your individual voice. This continues to be a very important aspect of my work to this day. What motivated you to move into textiles as an art form? I was represented by a gallery in Chelsea and exhibited my paintings regularly when I started experimenting with textiles. I was interested in textiles as a medium, but not fully committed. The more I worked with textiles the more my voice as an artist and point of view started to emerge. Eventually design took over from painting, but it was a slow process, not something that happened overnight. I was first attracted to your design aesthetic because it seems like a perfect balance of traditional style with a more modern twist. How do you manage to combine both? Thank you, Caitlin, for recognizing this. From the beginning this has been a very important part of my creative process. As a designer, it’s my job to create designs that can be integrated into a variety of spaces and environments. This is an important distinction between being a painter and working in decorative arts. My patterns are often inspired by traditional motifs, but by playing with the scale and color palette, I’m able to translate a familiar, traditional form into something completely new and fresh. When you walked me through the process of producing your textiles and carpets from the start you were incredibly passionate about where they were produced. Can you tell us about your teams process from beginning a design to finding the right people to produce it. There is no formal process – I do all of my own designing, and each of my designs evolves in a different way. Sometimes I have a concept in mind and I look for a particular type of fabric or material, and sometimes I discover a unique new material or process and then create the design that best showcases the raw components. It’s amazing that you support these small communities and have seen them grow to love what they produce for you. Tell us a little bit about the relationships you’ve built with them throughout growing your business. Part of my passion for designing textiles stems from the fact that it allows me to visit different countries and develop relationships with local artisans. This can be very challenging at the start when everything is unfamiliar and new, but over the years I’ve developed a dialogue and created strong bonds with the people I work with. You learn a lot about a culture by working alongside its people. I also feel a great sense of responsibility towards the weavers – although I’m committed to working with them, the growing number of machine-made knockoffs are a real threat to their livelihood and the preservation of their craft. Where does your inspiration originate? Travel is and always has been a big source of inspiration to me. I visit India, Morocco, and Turkey regularly, countries with rich visual histories and iconographies. The art and architecture are incredible, but they’re often very ornate and lack a modern sensibility. When I first started designing, I extracted motifs from the traditional art, objects, and architecture I discovered on my trips and translated them through my own contemporary lens to create some new and unique. You and I both love to travel and find our inspiration from the places we go.  Where have you gone lately that has made an impact on your choices in design? I went to the opening of the Venice Biennale this year with one of my best friends, who was the American curator. Venice is one of my favorite places to visit. It was one of the first European cities to trade with East, an influence that people often forget but that is evident in everything from Venetian architecture to the beautiful textiles, such as Fortuny. The dialogue between East and West has always inspired me and my work. Where are you traveling to next? I just traveled to India in late November. I be visited Mumbai and Jaipur for work, two cities that I visit often and have really grown to love. Mumbai has a wonderful urban energy, and Jaipur is a beautiful town, but it’s changing quickly and becoming more and more westernized. Afterwards I took some time off to visit Darjeeling, which I had never visited before. This is the region where the Darjeeling tea originates and it’s filled with historic old plantations, perfect for R&R. There are a few more trips in the New Year on the horizon. What are three essentials you find yourself bringing on each journey you take? – iPhone/iPad – it’s funny that these are relatively new in my life, but I can’t imagine being without them, even for just a few days. – Drawing Pad and pens – Sunglasses What’s next for Madeline Weinrib? Do you have any new collaborations you are working on? I love what you’ve done with Barneys New York and Manolo Blahnik. When it comes to collaborations, I prefer to consider them very carefully. I am working on a few new projects, which I’m very excited about, but I don’t want to say anything and jinx them. Experience has taught me that speaking too soon brings bad luck. A huge thank you to Madeline for opening up her studio to us. It was such a special treat getting to meet her and be able to share her work space with Sacramento Street readers! • Layer It: Let’s Get Active

This year, I resolved to maintain my 2013 workout routine. Since I don’t have the pressure of a new standard, it’s even more fun to do the classes I love – pilates, soulcycle and hitting the gym with Eric. I have to say, not having a number to live up to feels damn good. What I decided to do was give myself a fresh new set of workout clothes to help get me motivated to get myself out the door, that’s the hardest part, isn’t it? I outfitted myself with new pants, shoes, and more gear that gets me excited to sweat it out. These are a few of my favorites that I love having in my workout clothes rotation. Do you have any active wear favorites? I’ll be sharing more favorites over on Pinterest. 1.) Under Armour Sonic Tee 2.) adidas by Stella McCartney Three Quarter Pants 3.) Nike Water Bottle 4.) Fit Bit Flex (a must!) 5.) Champion Black and Gray Sports Bra 6.) Champion Cowl Neck Tunic 7.) Nike Lunar Element Training Shoe #style

  • a brand new week . . .

I hope all of you had a lovely holiday. This past week I decided to take off – enjoy time at home, went on a few road trips (Stinson Beach, Carmel and Tomales Bay) and enjoy some much needed R & R. I dove into books – have you read The Goldfinch? I can’t put it down. Sat around the fire while three generations knitted away – I was reluctant to start, but in the end it was such fun. But the best part of all was that I became an aunt this holiday. My adorable sister-in-law had a beautiful baby boy – I’m thrilled to say that both are healthy and I can’t wait to meet him in the New Year. After quite a memorable holiday I have to say, waking up to my alarm for this morning wasn’t very pleasant. With 2013 coming to a close, I’m in awe of everything that has happened throughout this past year. It’s been an amazing roller-coaster of owning my own business – I wouldn’t change this incredible journey I’m on. These next few days will be spent cleaning, organizing, and freshening up the office so that when 2014 arrives it can begin on a clean slate. I hope all of you have a fabulous Monday. I’m off to organize and start my list of 2014 goals! Do you have any on your list you’d like to share? #lifestyle
