  • On the Menu: The Grain Bowl

Thanksgiving, it’s the feast that keeps on giving. Tired of all the leftovers yet and want to re-create them into something tastier? I had some roasted veggies left over from our dinner party and turned them into something more palatable for the next day’s lunch. If you didn’t have roasted veggies for your feast yet, try this simple recipe that is sure to come in handy. All it takes is 15 minutes, and you can mix them up with greens and grains for a healthy, hearty and delicious salad or just enjoy them as a side for your next big feast! Roasted Veggies Instructions 2 cups chopped Cauliflower 2 cups chopped Broccoli 2 cups Green Beans 2.5 Tbsp Olive Oil Juice of 1/2 a Lemon 2 Garlic Cloves, minced 1/2 Onion, chopped 1 tsp Salt 1-1/2 tsp Cumin 1 tsp Turmeric Black Pepper Directions Preheat oven to 350. On a baking sheet, lay down veggies, onion and garlic. Then drizzle oil and lemon over the veggies and sprinkle on the spices (salt and pepper). Bake for 10 minutes, then mix with a wooden spoon. Let it sit in the oven another 5 minutes. Feel free to leave in the oven a little longer for a crunchier texture. Turn Those Leftovers Into this Healthy Grain Salad Ingredients 1 cup mixed Wild Rice and Brown Rice 1 can Coconut Milk 2 cups Roasted Veggies 3 Kale Leaves, de-stemmed and torn into bite-sized pieces 1/2 cup chopped Pistachios Dressing: 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 1 Tbsp Apple Cider Vinegar 1 Tbsp Gluten-Free Soy Sauce or Amino Liquids Directions First, cook the rice. When cooking grains, use this as a golden rule: one-part grain to two-parts liquid. Wash and rinse grains first, then place in a rice cooker with coconut milk and/or water. Using coconut milk gives the rice a subtly sweet taste and aroma (reminds me of Thailand every time!). Second, place kale in a bowl and drizzle in 1 heaping Tbsp Olive Oil. Massage the oiled leaves with your hand until well-coated and the Kale starts to relax, which makes it yummier in a salad. Once rice is cooked, throw into the bowl the grains, veggies and pistachios. Pour over the dressing and toss well. Serve, and enjoy! Recipe by Susan Whang / Photo & Styling by Caitlin Flemming #entertaining #cooking

  • A brand new week . . .

Starting a work week after four days off makes for a very happy Monday. I feel completely rejuvenated and ready to dive head first into a busy schedule and the start of holiday gatherings. This week is going to an exciting one indeed. I’ll be sharing some amazing posts (one of which is unveiling my Minted art wall) and then Friday I’ll finally be to tell all of you a little bit about what I have in store for my next chapter. It’s exciting – I promise! A few things inspiring me this weekend – the winter issue of Elle Decoration (it has endless inspiration), flowers from our Thanksgiving table arrangements (take a look at our Thanksgiving snapshots) and the latest notebook I’ve been using to stay organized. Cheers to an amazing week ahead! ps. Congrats Claire for being the Bae Home & Design giveaway winner! I’ll emailing you shortly. Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle

  • Thanksgiving Snapshots

This Thanksgiving we hosted friends and family at my Mom’s. After the hustle and bustle of  styling the tabletop and cooking it’s always lovely to look back at all the photos taken. This year we wanted to do a more natural and organic tabletop with Astier plates, a beautiful linen runner and stunning blooms I bought at the flower market. • On the Menu: Creamy Coconut Sweet Potato Mash

Over three years ago I started Sacramento Street as a place to share inspiration – I never thought that it would grow to be what it has become today. I am thrilled to welcome and introduce to you Sacramento Street’s new food contributor, Susan Whang. When I started “On the Menu” I wanted to challenge myself to cook different recipes instead of the staples. Since the column has grown to be a favorite amongst readers I started to think about working with someone to create original recipes – that’s where Susan comes in. Every week Susan will be sharing a new recipe that entails foods using dairy-free, gluten-free and nutrient-dense ingredients. Susan of Peas and Love is an Interior Designer and Nutritionist who helps people make lifestyle enhancements by way of good design and good food- the kind that leads to self-healing. We’re kicking this off with a sweet mash that is one of her holiday recipes and a healthy upgrade to a well-loved, classic side dish. Creamy Coconut Sweet Potato Mash Ingredients 4 Medium Sweet Potatoes 2 Tbsp Melted Coconut Oil 1 Tbsp Ghee 1 Tbsp Raw Honey 1/2 cup Coconut Milk 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon 1/4 tsp Cardamom Pinch of Turmeric Dashes of Salt to taste Directions Preheat oven to 400 degrees. To melt the coconut oil, place the open jar on top of the stove while the oven is on. Next, place potatoes on the center rack, and bake for 30 minutes until tender enough to pierce easily with a fork. Let the potatoes cool for 10 minutes, then peel skin off. Place potatoes in a bowl and combine with the rest of the ingredients. Mash away! Use a masher, fork, or an electric mixer if you want it extra creamy. Top with chives and serve. Enjoy your favorite side dish this holiday season without the guilt! • Take Art to Heart with Minted!

A few months ago Minted.com approached Erin, Joslyn and I to feature their amazing new art on our blogs. We brainstormed about a way to come up with a fun new take on creating the perfect art wall for a studio, loft and home (we’re all at different stages of our lives). Then we added on another challenge – letting our husbands pick the first piece of art and center it around that piece. Oh, was I nervous about this part . . . I’m usually the one making the decisions about everything that goes into our apartment, but I knew that anything Eric picked on Minted would be beautiful and a good challenge for myself. Low and behold, Eric picked a perfect piece for our serene studio. He picked the “Lovebirds” print, which was actually one of my top favorites on Minted and the fact that it was designed by a fellow Californian, Rene Mijares, made it even sweeter. Over the next few weeks Erin, Joslyn and I will be showcasing the prints we selected to go around our husbands pick and show all of you the final art wall – I’ll have a total of three prints, Erin will have four and Joslyn will have five. I can’t wait for all of you to see what we’ve created and there might even be a little treat in it for you at the end! Stay tuned for more friends! #interiors

  • a brand new week . . .

This weekend was just plain lovely. Plans were made on a whim, I strolled around my neighborhood popping in and out of shops I hadn’t visited in quite a while and enjoyed our fall-like weather and blue skies. It was one of those weekends that felt like more than two days – don’t you love when that happens? A few things I’m loving – a new book I picked up at the flea market last weekend, my Cuyana infinity scarf I can’t stop wearing, a vintage necklace I rediscovered, and my favorite new candle by R Nichols from Hudson Grace called Sparkle (it smells like Christmas!). Cheers to a new productive week before the holidays begin. Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle

  • a brand new week . . .

Although November has begun and we set our clocks back, mother nature graced us with a late Indian summer weather. The 75 + degree weather made for a delightful weekend at home. It felt as though it was supposed to be the middle of summer. Now I’m ready to tackle the work week and hopefully enjoy some warm evening strolls around the neighborhood to take advantage of this weather while it lasts. Be sure to check back this week for a peek at a new store I’m loving, a recipe that will get you baking in the kitchen and much more. Have a splendid week everyone! • a brand new week . . .

What a whirlwind week that led into the weekend. Through rain, wind and snow the SF Giants won the World Series – words cannot describe how amazing it was to win it all over again. I’m proud of Eric and the team. Now we’re en-route back to San Francisco and I am very excited to leave these freezing temperatures. I hope all of you have an incredible week ahead! • a brand new week . . .

It’s amazing what a weekend at home can do for your soul. I was finally able to get back to my normal weekend routine – pilates in the morning, coffee with friends, quality time with family, and I even squeezed in time for a photo shoot with the lovely Michelle Drewes. The weekend ended with a fabulous win in the playoffs by the Giants – there was lots of cheering and waving of orange rally rags. Today my stomach is in knots for tonight’s game, but it’s quite exciting to be this far in the playoffs again. A few things I’m loving from this weekend – the latest issue of Anthology, branches, and an air-plant that now lives on my nightstand. As the leafs turn to golden and red hues, I hope all of you have a wonderful week. Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle
