- Shop Talk: Ella Moss
There is a brand new addition to Fillmore Street – Ella Moss. It not only carries breathtaking clothing, but the interiors are stunning. As you walk into the all white 2,500 square foot space your eye is immediately drawn to the touches of rose gold and chevron-patterned brass mirrors. There is a sense of elegance and a touch of whimsy that comes over you as you shop. The new boutique at 1913 Fillmore Street is full of holiday-ready, shimmering attire and gifts for family and girlfriends. It will also soon offer a sneak peek at the Ella Moss resort collection (I’m already ready for a little beach vacation). If you are having trouble dreaming up an outfit for the holidays, I highly suggest popping into Ella Moss – you’ll come home with a few too many items, which is never a bad thing! - On the Menu: Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Soup
Our first rain of the season has graced us here in San Francisco. We’ve been quite fortunate this fall with sunshine and mild temps but alas, it couldn’t last forever. When rain comes all I want to do is stay inside, curl up on my sofa and enjoy a deliciously warm soup. That’s why I’m bringing you a tried and true from our house – a Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Soup. It’s easy and bound to have your whole family wanting seconds. So if you’re needing a tasty and warm meal for your family I highly recommend cooking this up. I’ll be serving this the day after Thanksgiving this year – you can pre-make it a few days ahead and then serve it! Enjoy! Pumpkin and Butternut Squash Soup Ingredients – 4 cups of peeled, cubed pumpkin – 6 cups of peeled, cubed butternut squash – 3 cloves of garlic – 1 medium onion – 16 oz of vegetable stock – 1 cup of water – 1 tablespoon butter – 1 teaspoon sea salt – 1/4 teaspoon pepper – 1 1/2 tablespoon curry – 1 tablespoon of coconut milk – sunflower seeds to garnish Directions 1. Chop onion and cook over medium-low heat in a large, heavy bottomed soup pot with butter and garlic. Cook until onions have softened. 2. Add curry (start with 1/2 tablespoon and add more as it cooks). Cook for an additional minute. 3. While the above is cooking halve, peel and de-seed pumpkin and butternut squash. Cut into 1″ cubes. 4. When the onion mixture is done, add pumpkin, butternut squash, vegetable stock, salt and pepper. Cover and bring to a boil. Once it’s boiling reduce heat and simmer over medium to low heat. 5. Simmer until butternut squash and pumpkin can be easily pierced with a fork. This should take about 30 minutes. 6. Let cool for about 5 minutes before transferring to a blender and puree. Adjust salt and add about 1/2 or 1 tablespoon of curry after blending. 7. Serve hot with about a tablespoon of coconut milk in each bowl and a sprinkle of sunflowers seeds on top for garnish. Enjoy! Photo by Caitlin Flemming #entertaining #cooking

- Adding Chairish Pieces to My Living Room + a Giveaway
We’re slowly but steadily furnishing our new apartment – it’s quite a task. Especially when I’m the type that needs to live in a space for awhile in order to figure out the perfect pieces for each room. Each room so far has evolved into exactly what I pictured – mixing old and new, distressed with modern, and neutrals with pops of blue. One source I’ve been going to for vintage finds is San Francisco based Chairish. You may remember them from a feature we did together in September. I’ve had the pleasure of picking out a few treasures for own home – they have amazing pieces. First, a lucite bench that had been calling my name – I keep moving it around from our bedroom, to the living room, but it’s the perfect piece to have nestled next to the sofa in case we need extra seating. The second piece that I was over the moon and beyond giddy about was a piece of artwork by Michele Spane. Her work was one of the first things that caught my eye – the white circles on natural butcher paper make for a graphically stunning piece and frankly a piece I had to have. It was love at first sight. Do you ever find yourself looking for artwork for your home for months or even years? That was me for our living room. There are pieces that I’ve liked but this piece of work by Michele I loved. After receiving the piece I’m plotting on how I can hopefully get an even larger piece for my dining room (coveting this blue piece!!). Since I fell in love with Michele Spane’s work so much I wanted to see if Chairish would giveaway a piece to a lucky Sacramento Street reader. Guess what friends – they are! One lucky winner will get to pick one of these three pieces for their very own home. White Circles Painting | Pair of Brown Abstract Paintings | Light Pink with Black Splatter Painting To enter the sweepstakes, click here. Once you’ve filled out the form you’ll be entered to win. Wishing all of you good luck and I’d love to know which of these three stunning pieces by Michele Spane you’d love to put in your home? Giveaway Details: Please complete the entry for a valid submission winner will be contacted via email. This sweepstakes closes at 11:59 p.m. ET. on Friday, November 22nd. - Layer It: Fall Travel
Today we’re launching a new series on the blog called Layer It. We’ll be taking the basics for any ensemble and adding our favorite layering pieces to give it a little personal style. If you have an outfit in mind but don’t know what to layer it with don’t fear – we’ve got you covered. From brunch with your girlfriends, to holiday parties, to traveling, to a trip to the park – we’ll be covering all the bases. First up, fall travel. It’s that time of year where everyone is planning a trip for work or going home for Thanksgiving (can you believe it’s right around the corner – I can’t!). Since I’m an avid traveler, I’m constantly getting asked what I wear on the plane – do I wear sweats, jeans, how do I keep warm? That’s basically how this new series got created. Personally, I always go with my favorite basics on a plane – then you can’t second guess yourself. Add on a cozy scarf, boots to keep your feet warm (especially if you’re traveling to cooler temps) and then a few accessories to give it a little character. But don’t add too many because you don’t want to be that girl taking everything off in the security line. This outfit is bound to be comfortable but chic – you just can’t go wrong! 1.) Proenza Schouler Merino Wool Sweater | 2.) J Brand 620 Photo Ready Mid-rise Skinny Jeans | 3.) Marc by Marc Jacobs ‘Baker’ Leather Strap Watch | 4.) ASOS Jewel Frame Earrings | 5.) ASOS Gold Plated Chain Pinky Ring | 6.) Kate Spade New York ‘Cedar Street – Luciana’ Handbag | 7.) Burberry ‘Body’ Eau de Parfum | 8.) Echo Sparkle Reversible Tube Scarf | 9.) Rebecca Minkoff ‘Macri’ Bootie And remember, the Nordstrom Half-Yearly Sale is going on right now. Save up to 40% on all of your fall essentials or start your holiday shopping early this year. I’ve already done a little damage for myself and got several items crossed off my list for family! I hope you’ve enjoyed the first of many “Layer It” features. - a brand new week . . .
Happy Monday! Oh how I hate how weekends go by so quickly and these days it’s getting darker a little too early for my taste. This weekend was a mix of work and play. Catching up with friends over margaritas, enjoying a little 70 degree sunshine on Saturday (I relish our warm November days) and then working in the office and around the house (we finally finished our entry art wall!). As this week starts I already feel like I’ve accomplished so much, which is good since it’s a busy one. Today, Eric and I are heading up to Napa for a little getaway. We’re checking out his triathlon course and I’m working on a few projects. We thought it would be fun to make it into a little overnight trip. Sometimes it’s important to plan an impromptu trip and with Napa so close it makes it quite easy. A few things I’m loving this week – my new Jen Ament art wall that we installed this weekend. It has me all giddy inside! A couple things coming to you later this week – a brand new series that will be debuted today, a new recipe courtesy of Eric, another exciting giveaway with Chairish and more. There are some things you shouldn’t miss out on: – Be sure to enter the Minted $250 Holiday Card giveaway that went live yesterday. – If you live in SF, come to Natalie Bowen Designs flower class at Margaret Elizabeth on Thursday. It’s going to be a grand old time. Who doesn’t love bubbly and flowers? I can’t wait! I hope all of you have a splendid week ahead. Photo by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle

- Blooms in Season: November
This month when Natalie and I started brainstorming ideas we automatically thought of putting together an arrangement that would inspire all of you when you are pulling inspiration and deciding on decor for Thanksgiving. It’s a time to play with orange and yellow hues. You can mix in elements you don’t normally do – in our case wheat. We hope that this bring you inspiration and leaves you excited for a beautiful day of thanks! With fall in full swing, you’ve been using more branches and leaves. Do you have any tips on using them in an arrangement? Branches are the perfect time to set the Autumn tone in an arrangement. Often heavy branches can fall out of the vase, so I find that I use tricks to get the arrangement from not falling overboard. If you criss cross the branches inside the vase, they will create a grid pattern that is perfect for holding the other stems in place. Always start with your largest stems first. What blooms should we be looking for this time of year? This is a transitional time of year. I start to simplify the number of flowers I use in arrangement as there are fewer in season since we have said goodbye to the last of the late summer blooms. We start to see more imports and if you are not opposed to buying flowers that are imported then you’ll widen what is available to you. What did we use in this arrangement? This month we used –caramel antike rose, ornamental plum, flannel flower, miscanthus gracillimus, wheat, nandina buds and stunning ranunculus I couldn’t pass up. The hues are breathtaking! This arrangement would be beautiful for the holidays, since Thanksgiving is around the corner this is great inspiration. Do you have any tips for creating an arrangement for such a special day? I think that when creating an arrangement for a holiday dinner table, it is important to remember that there are a lot of other elements on the table. Don’t make the arrangement so tall or so large that it gets moved after the food and wine is set on the table. If you are serving from a buffet or plated, it is great to create a table scape that is the length of the table, as it won’t need to be moved. If you are serving family style, it is better to make larger arrangements otherwise the table will start to look messy when the serving platters are placed. I’m thrilled your hosting a workshop – I’ve learned so much from taking one myself! What will attendees be learning from you? I am so excited to host this workshop with Meg from Margaret Elizabeth. I will be teaching participants how to easily decorate a holiday table and share a few floral tips. Participants will also make one arrangement to take home, while practicing these tips. It is going to be a lot of fun! Join us for a flower arranging fete led by Natalie Bowen Designs. Thursday, November 14th 6:30 – 8:30pm Margaret Elizabeth Studio 1735b Union Street, San Francisco Create a holiday arrangement that you’ll take home with you! Sip cocktails and enjoy 20% off all Margaret Elizabeth jewelry. Space is limited and tickets are $50.00. Visit www.margaretelizabeth.com for tickets.
