- On the Menu: Comfort Food for Fall
My favorite season is fall. The light changes ever so slightly and there is a crisp feeling in the air. I turn to my home more than usual – nesting is in full form here! Branches have been brought indoors, new candles are ready to burn, and fresh throw blankets are at the ready for a cool evening at home. This season I hope to also find new recipes to shake up my usual rotation. We have made it our priority to always sit down for dinner together since Jackson was born. We try to cook from scratch most evenings and I have been searching for some new recipes to shake up our rotation. Chicken is a favorite with my son – he just loves it regardless of how I decide to prepare it. I have paired up with As Quoted, my favorite café down the street, to prepare a new and exciting twist on chicken potpie. I love comfort food but don’t always love the high calories or ingredients that aren’t always that good for us. So the folks at As Quoted have come up with a delicious alternative to the more conventional recipe. Now you can enjoy this time honored recipe guilt-free with a new version of comfort food. I know this is hard to believe, but it’s gluten free! We used antibiotic-free, fresh chicken from Foster Farms Simply Raised Chicken that is raised on a vegetarian diet. Using healthy, fresh, and seasonal food is a high priority at my home and this chicken fits in perfectly with my definition of healthy. The new comfort food is good for you too! What better way to ring in the new season than to whip up individual chicken potpies for dinner? And your kiddos won’t even realize how healthy these are. Happy nesting everyone! Gluten Free & Dairy Free Pot Pie For the Filling 1 large chicken breast, bone in and skin on 1/4 cup + 2 tbsp medium-high heat oil, divided like avocado oil (butter or ghee can also be used if tolerated) 1/2 cup sorghum flour 4 cups dairy free milk (like almond, rice, or oat milk) 2 cups chicken bone broth, divided 1/2 tsp sea salt, more to taste 1/2 tsp finely ground pepper, more to taste 2 tsp minced fresh thyme, more to taste 1 tbsp champagne vinegar 1/2 cup small diced yellow onion (about a half of a small onion) 1/2 cup small diced leek, white and light green parts only (about 1 small leek) 1 cup small diced carrot 5 garlic cloves, finely minced 1 corn on the cob, kernels removed (or 1 cup frozen corn if not in season) 1 cup peas, fresh or frozen and thawed Cooking Instructions: Preheat oven to 400°F Place chicken breast on a parchment lined baking sheet and place in oven for 45 minutes or until internal temperature reaches 165°F or juices run clear. Set aside and let cool. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a medium sauté pan over medium heat. Whisk in sorghum flour until well combined. Add the non dairy milk slowly, one cup at a time, whisking constantly. Add in the bone broth. Heat mixture until it bubbles, then turn down to a simmer and let thicken whisking occasionally. Meanwhile, in a large cast iron skillet, heat the remaining oil over medium heat. Add onion and leeks and sauté until onions begin to brown. Add in carrots and garlic until garlic becomes fragrant. Then add in remaining bone broth and let simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated and been absorbed. Add in corn and peas until warm throughout (unless using frozen peas, then add corn first then peas after corn is warm throughout). Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper, adjusting to taste. Remove skin and bones from chicken and medium dice chicken. When sauce has thickened and vegetables are cooked, add chopped chicken to vegetables and pour sauce over and stir to combine. Add champagne vinegar, taste and adjust seasoning. For the Crust 1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces, plus more for brushing 1 tbsp iced water, more as needed 1/3 cup gluten free brown rice flour 1/3 cup sorghum flour 1/4 cup potato starch 3 tbsp tapioca flour 2 tbsp arrowroot starch 1 tbsp coconut sugar, finely ground 1/2 tsp xanthan gum 1/2 tsp sea salt 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1 egg yolk Cooking Instructions: Place butter in freezer. Ice 3tbsp of water and set aside. Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk together the brown rice flour, sorghum flour, potato starch, tapioca, arrowroot, sugar, xanthan gum and sea salt in a medium bowl. Using 2 knives or a pastry cutter, cut in cold butter until pieces are around the size of peas or smaller. In a stand mixer or separate medium bowl, whisk together wet ingredients: yogurt, oil, eggs and vanilla. Add the beaten egg, using a fork to incorporate. Add 1 tablespoon of the iced water and continue to mix. If dough will not stick together when pinched, continue to add iced water 1 teaspoon at a time until sticks. Use hands to shape dough into a ball. Place dough ball between two pieces of parchment paper and flatten to a disc, 1 inch thick. Using a rolling pin, roll out dough until desired thinness. If the edges crumble, simply push them back together. Peel off the top layer of parchment and cut into 4 pieces, the sizes of your baking dishes. Fill dishes with chicken filling and cover with dough. Crimp edges to desired design. Poke a hole in the middle of the pie crust (be creative!) to let out steam when baking. When crust design is complete, brush surface with egg yolk. Bake pie for around 25 minutes or until warm throughout and nicely browned on the surface. Serve and enjoy! Serves: 4 If you’re interested in more recipes that fall are part of the new comfort food, head to Foster Farms. This post is a partnership with Foster Farms. All opinions are my own. - On My Bookcase: Two Must Have Design Books
I’ve been anxiously awaiting both of these books to come out for a long, long time. Writing a book is a labor of love and to watch both Rebecca Atwood and Mark D. Sikes go through this process to create incredibly works of art is truly inspiring on so many levels. I’m thrilled to be sharing a little peek into these two gorgeous books with all of you. Rebecca Atwood: Living With Pattern Rebecca Atwood looks at the world and notices the small details around her. Raised in Cape Cod, there were patterns surrounding her at all times. It’s this awareness that helps to make her textiles some of my very favorite. I’ve been a fan of Rebecca’s textiles for some time. You can find pillows with her fabric on them scattered throughout my home. They all share one thing in common: they have an earthy and warm sense to them. Their perfection is in their exquisite imperfection. Now, all of us can learn a great deal from Rebecca’s book Living With Pattern. Not only is this book a visual treat with her hand-painted details, strong graphics, and perfect photographs by Emily Johnston, but it also provides important lessons on how to use textiles as the basis of your home design. I urge you to look at Living With Pattern. I am certain you’ll be pulled into it, just as I was. Mark D. Sikes: Beautiful I was nearly giddy when I opened my mail and found a copy of Beautiful, by the talented designer, Mark D. Sikes. I share a deep affinity with Mark: the color blue. But as I sat down to read his book, I realized very quickly, that there is so much more to his decorating than a color he has an affinity for. Beautiful firmly plants him as one of today’s great decorators. At first glance, you might appreciate the simplicity of a room he has decorated. However, after careful study, you realize there is a depth to the patterns, textures, and placement within a room that is anything but simple. Mark creates traditional rooms that dance gracefully with modern touches, tribal rugs, or handmade tables. In a world where many call themselves decorators, Mark stands in a league of his own. I only hope to grow into being a decorator of his immense talents. Be sure to check back next month for more book reviews. I’m constantly finding new books – both decorative and nightly reads that I want to begin to sharing with all of you. Photos by Caitlin Flemming #lifestyle #interiors
- Design & Technology: Creative Changes
I had intended to keep my office in my home for a few more years, but circumstances beyond my control, forced me to rethink this option. Broken pipes and water streaming into my son’s bedroom meant we had to rearrange the entire house. Suddenly, I was left with nowhere to work. The neighborhood café became my makeshift office. Something needed to change if I wanted to find the inspiration that’s essential working in a creative field. It was time for me to look for a new place to work. While strategizing a location, my temporary workplace became my local coffee shop. Little did I know, that my future office would be just down the street from where I was working (Sacramento Street of course!). Armed with my HP Spectre, I was ready to let my creativity run wild. I’m moving in new directions and HP Spectre is helping me get there. Every once in a while, we need to take a turn in the direction we are heading and move to another path. I love my work with a passion, and I look forward to this new chapter in my ever evolving work life. HP Spectre has made a big difference in my work life. It’s amazing how the right tools can influence your creative process – I know I’ve been on overdrive lately! To read about my first encounters with my HP Spectre read this post and this post. - Blooms in Season: Dreamy Dahlias
One of my favorite parts of transitioning from summer to fall, are the late summer flowers. Dahlias come at a time of year where it still feels firmly like summer but the light has shifted and you know a change is just around the corner. To me, dahlias are pure happiness and I can’t help but smile, every time I see them. Not only do they come in a rainbow of colors, but they also come in a wide variety of sizes. This month, Natalie will show you the royalty of dahlias. These beauties come directly from local growers in the Bay Area. I am over the moon in love with these beauties. How to maximize the life of cut dahlia flowers? Dahlias don’t have long lives but there are a few tricks. The most important thing is that they don’t have a lot of water. Just a few inches of water will do, and if you give them more, they will wilt faster. Dahlias also like hot water. Not boiling but the hottest water that comes out of your tap will help them quite a bit. Types dahlia flowers we featured. Bowen (small white one) KA Cloud (pink one) Passion Vine KA’s Khaleesi Where do you purchase your dahlias? I am very lucky to be in the Bay Area, as dahlias don’t ship well so we only get them from local farms. They don’t do well without water, whereas flowers such as peonies or tulips can be shipped without water for several days or up to a week. Dahlias start to disintegrate quite quickly. We get ours from farms in Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. I love the fact that you have local growers, like these from Santa Cruz that you’ve made connections with. Is there a reason dahlias grow along the coast? They like the light, up to 14 hours. When the days get shorter, they start to fade. They also like sandy soil that is nutrient rich called “sandy lome” soil. They don’t like the heat even though they like the light. Do you have a favorite dahlias? All of them! The little guys and the big fluffy ones. It’s all about the discrete tones in the petals and their unique personalities. In the last year I discovered the “Bowen Dahlias” and the “Sweet Natalie’s”. I’m feeling enthusiastic about all those names, for obvious reasons. Tell us about the dahlias in golden gate park – when is the best time to visit? Late August to September and some years until October. The Dahlia Dell is even available to reserve for a little party or gathering. I’m inspired to have a little luncheon there sometime. A huge thank you to Natalie for putting together this stunning dahlia arrangement. To get inspired by past Blooms in Season posts – click here. - Style: Fall Is Around the Corner
As we get further into September, the light begins to change and you can clearly feel that fall is in the air. Crispness to the air in the morning, shorter number of hours in the sun, and the ends of leaves beginning to change color. These and many other reasons, make fall my favorite season of the year. Outfit Details Caitlin: Long Open-Front Cardi in Charcoal | White Boyfriend Shirt | Rockstar Super Skinny Jeans in Dark Wash | Oversized Flannel Scarf | Large Double-Zip Crossbody Bag in Black Jackson: Henley Raglan-Sleeve Tee in Blue | Quilted Chambray Vest | Skinny Cords in Ink Blue Maybe it’s the clothes that also make it a favorite time of year. Switching to layers with long sleeves and items you can take on and off gets me excited! This is true not only for me, but also for the clothes I buy for my toddler. I like it when both of us can have multiple layers as the fog can roll in at any moment in San Francisco. When you have a toddler, they’re growing so quickly, that they outgrow their clothes constantly. I have found that going to Old Navy is a great solution. They’re clothes are mostly 100% cotton and the prices are so reasonable. I always find things that are perfect for both Jackson’s wardrobe as well as my own. There are so many textures, patterns, and colors to choose from. From 9/15 to 10/2 there is an excellent sale on Kid’s and Baby. So head to Old Navy . . . and happy layering! - Style: Jenni Kayne Fall Favorites
As we start to feel the air and light slowly change, I know that it’s the beginning of one of my favorite seasons – autumn. Fall is the time of year I equate with buying new clothes and I always try to get key pieces for my wardrobe. These are almost always ones I can wear year round when in San Francisco! One of my favorite shops – Jenni Kayne – just opened it’s doors in Palo Alto. I was giddy with excitement when I heard the news. Every fall I’ve added a couple of her pieces to my wardrobe and they’ve become instant staples. This season, the Swiss Dot Boyfriend Shirt and Mule Slide in Leopard Ponyhair Mules are my new go-to pieces. What I love about Jenni Kayne designs are their timeless design and impeccable quality. I’m thrilled to announce that I’m hosting an event at their new shop on Thursday, September 8th from 12pm – 3pm. Natalie Bowen Designs and I have partnered up with Jenni Kayne to bring you stunning floral bouquets for you to take home. We wanted all of you to be able to take home a little treat to remind you of our Blooms in Season posts. Come by to say hello! I look forward to seeing you! Photos by Claire Giffen #style
- Design & Technology: HP Spectre
As many of you know, I care about aesthetics in just about everything! Before I buy anything, I go through the process of deciding if it’s good for me in both form and function. Many things fail the test and I move on or wait for a better product. This mindset can make decisions difficult when it comes to technology. Luckily the HP Spectre laptop came along. You may remember it briefly from this post – well the day came where I finally had a chance to see it in person. When I opened the box I nearly gasped – the beauty of this computer had me speechless. The mix of sleek black with just a touch of copper was a total win in my book. As I took it out of the box I wondered if it would function as well as I hoped. I turned it on and the high definition screen was so clear it felt as if I could step right into the image. And the laptop is light – only 2.45 pounds, so I can take it with me when I travel and not break my back! Each time I open it and the copper keys light up, I dance a little jig at the beauty of this laptop. The magic was finding form and function in the same computer. It’s a match made in heaven. As someone who makes a portion of my living by writing, it’s a necessity to have a computer that I can bring on an airplane, to a coffee shop, and also fit it into the color palate at home. This is the tool I need to get my job done. I could hardly wait for the chance to share it with you. This post is a partnership with HP Spectre. All opinions are my own. - Workspace: Elsie Green
As a designer and stylist, I’m always looking for unique pieces when I have a photo shoot on the horizon. And if I want items that stand out that are authentic and unique, I head directly to Elsie Green in Concord. It’s a family owned business – the owners are the nicest and most talented couple you’ll ever meet. They go to Europe and Morocco several times a year and come back with a well-curated warehouse full of vintage treasures that will leave you spellbound. I have countless items in my own home – cutting boards, vintage china, my living room chairs, placemats, linens – the list is endless! The newest addition to Elsie Green is their design studio. I walked in and was speechless with the transformation. Again, it’s a stunning example of the magic Laurie and her husband can accomplish! If you haven’t made a trip out to Elsie Green – it’s a must. But don’t worry if you can’t visit the store in person they have a wonderful online shop and are at the Alameda Flea Market every month. Seeing their studio come to life has given me so much inspiration for my own.
