- Recipe: Silly Pancake Tradition
Jackson recently had to create a poster board explaining our family traditions and present it to his first grade class. Eric and I have known each other for over 20 years now so a lot of my family traditions have merged with his family's traditions. One of the favorites we have passed down to the kids is the making of a silly pancake (IE - Dutch Baby) each Sunday morning. When Eric's grandma would host us, she would make each person in the household their personal pancake. Eric and his brothers have always called them "silly pancakes" because when they cook they take silly shapes. Each one comes out completely different. Our kids absolutely love the name and will sit in front of the oven watching it rise to see which shape it takes each weekend. SILLY PANCAKE RECIPE (this is a 1/2 recipe, that serves two adults and two children. If you have more people, you can always double it). INGREDIENTS -3 eggs -1/2 cup of milk -1/2 cup of flour -1 teaspoon salt -1 teaspoon vanilla (or almond) extract. -2 tablespoons of butter. DIRECTIONS 1) Heat oven to 425. 2) Crack eggs into a large mixing bowl. 3) Add flour and milk to the eggs (flour first, then milk). 4) Combine ingredients until the flour is absorbed by the milk and eggs. 5) Add in salt and vanilla 6) Stir all ingredients together (it is ok if there are lumps). 7) Cut the butter into four pieces then add the butter to a 12 x 8 baking dish (spread the pieces out). Place in the oven to melt the butter. 8) Once the butter is melted, pull the pan out (it will be hot) and add the mixture into the melted butter. 9) Place the baking pan back into the oven for 25 - 30 minutes. Keep an eye on the pancake. You will know it is done once the edges turn brown. 10) Cut the pancake into equal pieces and serve with your favorite berries. Eric's favorite trick is to pour powdered sugar on top of the berries and then squeeze a lemon on top of the sugar to create a delicious combination. It is a simple recipe to follow and an easy one to do with kids. I hope you can enjoy our family tradition this weekend!
- Interiors: Using Pattern in Your Home
I don’t know if it was the enormous amount of time all of us spent at home these past two years, or just my love of English interiors, but I have been gravitating to pattern on pattern in homes. My own design work has always involved pattern but lately it’s been taken to a whole new level. In a recent home I designed, the mix of patterns worked so seamlessly together from one room to the next. I think what made it work is both a mix of the size of the pattern and connection between each pattern we chose. It felt so good to see how great it looked in the end. Don’t be afraid of starting with wallpaper. I prefer doing the entire room instead of just one accent wall. Then using a print of a different size on curtains, cushions and upholstery. Notice in this project that the patterns don’t always match but they do coordinate with one another. I think all of us need comfort in our home right now and adding a little pattern to the mix can give you that cozy and intriguing space. In the end, you’ll have a space that feels both beautifully comfortable and inviting. Photo by Stephanie Russo for Caitlin Flemming Design
- Nighttime Reading Favorites
A nighttime routine has been a big part of getting our kids down for bed each evening. One of the main components of the routine has been reading. The last couple of months, we have all been cuddling up into one bed to read chapter books as a family. Other nights, we have the kids pick out the book they are loving. Having this down time to read before bed helps them wind down and it is a nice way for all of us to spend a few final minutes together before the day ends. Here are a few books that the kids and I love. A few of our family favorites: Little Blue Truck Planting a Rainbow All We Need (written by a childhood friend) Corduroy Little Blue Truck Leads the Way The Gruffalo What the Road Said You are Here for a Reason You are Loved - The Collection (a favorite with our family) Little People, Big Dreams (Amelia Earhart) Little People, Big Dreams (Billie Jean King) Little People, Big Dreams (Jesse Owens) Little People, Big Dreams (Mahatma Gandi) The Boxcar Children Series
- Gift Guide: Crazy Little Thing About Love
Valentine's Day has certainly changed for us these last seven years since the kids have arrived. Instead of romantic dinners out and long weekends away, we have changed our focus to comfortable evenings at home creating as many memories as possible for the kiddos. This past year, Amelia is very into decorating the table for each holiday, so when I mentioned Valentine’s Day was around the corner she insisted on pink. A little surprise came in the mail from Heather Taylor Home and each evening for dinner we’ve been eating with these Scalloped Edge placemats in Katherine Plaid and I love the way they can be paired with the Mayfair Plaid napkins. I'm also very into these flowers from Cutter Brooks. Instantly made our table feel ready for the day of love! Eric has been living in his Faherty sweats and sweatshirt since Christmas. They are some of the softest pants I have ever felt. He raved about them so much I even got myself a pair of their sweatpants. They’ve paired well with my Jenni Kayne beanie (I now have three colors that I rotate) and slippers to allow me maximum comfort when relaxing at home. This past year I’ve been investing in my work from home attire and practically lived in these Marina Culottes and Sweater for the month of January. Remember to use code Caitlin15 for 15% off at Jenni Kayne. For the kids on Valentine's Day, we like them to get creative with arts and crafts. We found these coloring cards, crayon set, stickers and beads to bring them the most inspiration when sitting down to create a little something special. for their friends. Hope this brought you a little inspiration for the day of love. Happy Valentine's Day!
- Room Anatomy: SF Living Room
In our living room, I wanted to create a room that is light, layered and a place where our family and friends instantly feel at home. It was also important that a lot of our previous pieces transitioned into this space. In order for this large room to feel open I placed the sofa along the windows due to the two openings to the foyer and the dining room on the opposite wall. Across from the sofa I found places for different chairs. I love that when you walk into the space you have multiple areas to sit in. Since we have young kids I wanted an ottoman as a coffee table so they could feel as though this was a place they gravitate to. They love to hold dance shows, Olympic performances, and jumping contests from the ottoman. Another piece we all fight over is the chaise from Elsie Green. I'll be honest, when I first bought it I was a little worried about how it would look and make the space feel but it's probably one of my favorite pieces. - January Favorites
January is a month where we're coming down from the frenzy of the holidays and we get to set into a calmer way of life. At the start of the year I have a craving for staying cozy at home. Eventually, as the month creeps towards the finish, I crave the warmth of the sun in the spring. Each month I'll be pulling together a curated list of some favorite things that our family is enjoying. The other night I asked the kids if they had anything they wanted me to highlight and they both said yes. Love these kids! This month I've been living in my Fisherman Cocoon Crewneck Sweater (for 15% off use code Caitlin15) - as my family has said, the sweater is my "uniform." It's the perfect weight this time of year. We've been having some rainy days and misty mornings. I've also been living in these Freda Salvador Brooke boots that are water resistant (for 15% off use code 15Caitlin). They are light as a feather, which isn't always the case with rain boots. Anyone else having dry skin issues? I've been loving this Osea Body Butter and the Body Oil - (for 10% off use code Caitlin10). I cannot go a day without using them. They have changed my skin this winter. An office favorite that I shared on Instagram this month was how we use these Moroccan baskets for each client project. I also use them in our car for job site supplies, for shoe organization in our entry and in our laundry area. Now for the kids' picks! Amelia has been living in her Columbia Sportwear Beanie. The best part is that it's lined with fleece so she doesn't get itchy. Jackson has been addicted to his Kids Fitbit. He watches his steps every day and is hoping to get to 20,000 soon (his record is currently 18,286). He has also been going to sleep earlier to get his sleep tracked. A win, win for us! I'm looking forward to sharing a few favorites each month with you.
- Vendor Spotlight: Shoppe Amber Interiors Marin
This past weekend Shoppe Amber Interiors opened their doors at Marin Country Mart. It's a breath of fresh air to Marin and I'm personally thrilled to have it so close to home! I had the pleasure of getting a sneak peek before they opened and I was blown away with all of the details. If you live near Marin Country Mart, I highly recommend planning a time to stop by to experience the Shoppe in person. Since a lot of you do not live in the Bay Area, I wanted to pull together a few of my favorites that I love from the Shoppe (you can see my video tour here). Evergreen Pillow Stanton Basket Hand Towel Sofa Lamp Vase Throw Candle Holder When you walk into the shoppe, you instantly feel like sitting down for a few hours. I could picture myself having a cup of tea, hanging in their kitchen area and working from the chaise lounge in the entrance. If a shop can make you feel at home, you know that it's designed to perfection. It had me craving a little home update. Welcome Shoppe Amber Interiors to Marin! Photography by Bess Friday
- New Year, New Content
Here’s to welcoming a new year. Between the pandemic and a bustling work schedule, last year was a whirlwind with very few changes to write! I don’t know what 2022 will hold - likely smiles, laughter, and some tears. There will be some exciting new projects (like book number two!), collaborations and travel. There will be days with endless to-do lists that won’t get finished and days where we will do nothing. There will be days spent cherishing moments with family and some unknowns that we will not be able to control. All in all - I’m ready for this new year to unfold. I’m incredibly grateful for this community on the blog and I’m craving to bring it back to life. This year, I’ll be sharing more - about our home, design projects, style, entertaining and other exciting developments. I’d love to hear what you want to see more of in 2022. Please don’t be shy because I want to inspire you, your home and your everyday life. Cheers to bringing this platform back to what it used to be. I cannot wait to share so much more with all of you! - Entertaining: Setting the Table with Heather Taylor Home
I don’t know about all of you, but I love the distinct change of seasons that begins to happen at this time of year. Days get shorter, the air is crisper, and I tend to want to focus on my home more. Recently, I’ve loved focusing on setting a beautiful table. I've been making a point to mark everyday as an occasion to set the table. Autumn colors are so comforting for me. For this table I turned to my vintage transferware and Heather Taylor Home for a perfect fall combination. I’m currently loving all things plaid and gingham so this table hits all of my favorites. Much of what I put on the table can be gathered from the outdoors or the grocery store. Heather Taylor Home Pieces: Glen Plaid Tablecloth Glen Plaid Napkins Quilted Placemats What I love about Heather's linens is the quality of each piece. The hand-crafted table linens are beautiful and they wash like a dream. I've probably washed each of mine a dozen + times and they get better and better. This tabletop is definitely a top contender for our Thanksgiving table but you never know what inspiration might come before then. What are you loving lately? I’d love to hear. - Interiors: Fragments Identity x Caitlin Flemming
Last January, in the midst of the pandemic, we decided to move neighborhoods and relocated to a new home. It happened in such a serendipitous way. Suddenly we had far more space and the furniture we had wasn’t filling the spaces of our new home. Luckily, I was able to turn to Fragments Identity to help curated and add several key pieces to our home. We had two stunning chairs and pillows from them in our former home that have worked perfectly in the new space. Fragments Identity Pieces: Ottoman, Chair, Pillows The biggest impact has been a huge ottoman covered in a stunning hand-loomed wool from India. The ottoman is so multi-versatile - from a place to organize a project I’m working on, to a “wall” for badminton for the kiddos. The next thing we added from their collection at Fragments Identity were upholstered chairs in our dining room. Not only are they stunning, they are so comfortable. We now often use the space while we are working. Finally, we added a vintage chair for our living room that is both comfortable and beautiful in form. Fragments Identity Pieces: Upholstered Dining Chairs All of these Fragment Identity pieces will remain in our home for a very long time. And isn’t this what all of us are striving for - a more sustainable way of designing our home? Images by Stephanie Russo
